Superintendent McCann Bids Farewell to Shorewood

With the school year drawing to a close, Superintendent Blane McCann said his final goodbyes to Shorewood at a reception Wednesday, as he prepares to retire from the school district after a decade of service.

McCann was greeted by a warm reception, with more than 45 people attending. People from different groups in the district thanked McCann for his service, including members of the administration and staff, past employees, and community supporters with the SEED Foundation, Alumni Association, and friends and neighbors with whom McCann has collaborated with.

School Board member Ruth Treisman spoke and thanked McCann for his hard work and dedication. She cited accomplishments such as maintaining services despite cuts to the budget, and gave kudos for his success in garnering grants and understanding intricacies of the financial picture "from day one." 

"Things got really complicated really fast, and you were right there with it, Blane," said Treisman.

Besides his financial acumen and savvy in furthering the efforts of the Drive to Distinction fundraising for the athletic field, Treisman also credited him a "students matter" approach, and his ability to preserve physical and health education, services like the full-time nurse, and nutritional services.

Treisman lauded him for having the vision to start a district nutrition plan early.

"There are so many other things I could have added to this list. You've always understood the district, have recognized the value in the history and traditions," she said. "You have been a wonderful spokesperson for the district. We will miss you."

McCann addressed the group, which also included teary-eyed teachers from across the district who had been most touched by McCann during his 10-year tenure at Shorewood Schools.

"It has been a pleasure to be the superintendent of one of the best school districts in the country," McCann said. "It has been meaningful to lead the district for the past nine years."

He went on to articulate projects and community involvement that he was able to be a part of in Shorewood. 

And finally, his voice breaking, he said, "I will miss you all very much," and turned away for a moment.

Treisman presented two framed paintings to McCann, which had been his favorites in the library. Both had been donations by the class of 1955 and have the plaques to note this.

McCann plans to leave at the end of June for his .
