Shorewood Drama Grabs 13 Tommy Awards for 'Spring Awakening,' 'Godspell'

Building on its stamp as a "world-renowned" program, Shorewood High School Drama fielded more than a dozen awards from 25 nominations for its winter and spring productions.

Building on its stamp as a "world-renowned" program, Shorewood Drama garnered 25 nominations and brought home 13 Tommy Awards for its productions of Spring Awakening and Godspell.  Out of 14 nominations for the statewide honor, Shorewood High School's theater program received awards for its spring production Spring Awakening — a rock adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s 1891 expressionist play, which tells the story of 19th century German teenagers facing issues related to sexuality. Shorewood Drama also fielded one award, from 10 nominations, for its winter musical Godspell. The musical by Stephen Schwartz is a modern account of the Gospel according to St. Matthew. Greyhound Roundup: Girls Soccer Team Rolls over Greenfield

Girls softball team earns two wins in five games last week.

Here is a roundup of Shorewood High School sports courtesy of Athletic Director Bill Haury. Girl’s softball — In their second week of five or more games, the varsity girls earned two wins against three losses. They lost to Whitnall, 11-0 with the Falcomns scoring seven of their runs in the third and fouth innings. They split a double header with Brown Deer, winning 5-4 in the first game and losing the second game, 4-6. In the second inning, Brittany Lee hit a 2-out, 2-run single that gave Shorewood the lead that they never relinquished on their way to the 5-4 victory. Brittany also made a diving catch in center field to save what would have been a three run homer. Aisling Moloney and Ashley Eimers each had two hits and Aisling stole home …

'Spring Awakening' Opens at SHS Friday

Shorewood High School drama students rehearsed this week as they prepared for six performances of the controversial musical.

Shorewood Drama's production of Spring Awakening opens Friday in the high school auditorium.  Ticket information is available here; they run $10 for adults and $5 for students.  The rock adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s 1891 expressionist play tells the story of 19th century German teenagers facing issues related to their sexuality. The controversial, Tony Award-winning musical hit Broadway in 2006.  It had been banned in Germany (and in the United States) due to its controversial subject matter. It deals with taboo topics like suicide, teen pregnancy, masturbation and sexual assault. Performances run Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. and continue May 16, 17, 18 at 7 p.m. at 1701 E. Capitol Dr.

Greyhound Roundup: Tennis Team Dominates in Week of Conference Play

Here is a roundup of Shorewood High School sports courtesy of Athletic Director Bill Haury. Girl’s softball — The girls played six games in four days, with the game on Friday being rained out. The girls went 0-6, but played competitive throughout the week. Their best game was on Tuesday against Pewaukee where they kept the game close and mounted a rally in the final inning only to come up short in a 12-9 loss. Freshman Celeste Carroll continues to pitch well and the defense gives her strong support in the field, it’s just the team’s offense that has not gotten going yet this spring. Golf — On Friday, the five varsity golfers worked through the rain and cold to take sixth place out of 14 teams in the Port Washington Invitational. Bobby Kohl…

Newsweek Names Shorewood High School One of Top 1,000 in Nation

Magazine's latest list of best schools in the U.S. lists Shorewood as 710th, the eleventh-best ranking in Wisconsin.

Among the 55 Wisconsin high schools that made Newsweek's list, Shorewood had the eleventh-highest ranking in the state. Nicolet High School was ranked 628h in the nation, while Whitefish Bay was ranked 417th. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. Shorewood Coach, Swimmer Receive Top Honors

Rob McCabe was named Division 2 swim coach of the year, and Kristin Malone swimmer of the year by the Wisconsin Interscholastic Swim Coach Association.

Shorewood High School's swimming program garnered accolades this weekend, receiving awards for Division 2 coach of the year and swimmer of the year. For the third time since 2001, Rob McCabe has been named coach of the year. He heads both SHS swim teams, as well as the Shorewood Swim Club. And, junior Kristin Malone was named swimmer of the year. The two were honored Sunday at the Wisconsin Interscholastic Swim Coach Association's annual banquet.  Malone is an 11-time conference champion, the state record holder in the 200-yard and 100-yard freestyle events and holds numerous school and pool records at SHS. After she graduates from high school, Malone plans to continue swimming in college at the Division 1 level. Currently, she is keeping …

Will You Buy Tickets for Shorewood Drama's 'Spring Awakening'?

Suicide, teen pregnancy, masturbation and sexual assault, among other taboo topics, will take center stage at Shorewood High School this spring, as drama students tackle the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical.

In a little more than a week, Shorewood High School will become the first traditional public school in the nation to put on a production of Spring Awakening.
