Help Atwater Elementary Family Devastated in Weekend Fire

Principal Tim Kenney has organized a donation drive for a family who lost almost all their belongings when their Milwaukee home went up in flames over the weekend.

They were able to escape safely, but D’Travia Heard, Dajuan Love and their mother Deanna Gainer lost nearly everything they own when the family's Milwaukee home went up in a blaze over the weekend. But, another family at Atwater Elementary, which the two children attend, is rallying around them and launching a donation drive to help the family get back on its feet. Atwater Principal Tim Kenney, who is organizing the drive, said the school is accepting cash donations and other items including gently-used clothing and furniture. The school is also accepting checks made payable to Atwater School. Cash donations will be used to purchase gift cards for the family to purchase replacement items. "I would do it for any family that had their house …

Dominican HS is sponsoring a mattress funraiser next week where a good portion of the money is getting donated to charity. Maybe someone could help the family out by buying some beds there for the family.   more ›

Shoreline Schtick

A Red, White and Blue Thank You

Patch for Patriots was a huge success! The citizens of the Shoreline collected hundreds of items to ship to soldiers fighting in Afghanistan.

Whew! My arms are tired! But it's not from running or from playing tug of war with Lucydog. It's from unpacking all of the amazing donations we received during the Patch for Patriots drive! For the past couple of weeks I fought my urge to peek in on the Stone Creek Coffee stores that generously offered to collect the items being donated to send to my adopted soldier, Command Sergeant Major Shelton R. Williamson from the US Army, currently stationed in Afghanistan and in charge of just over 1,000 American troops. I'd find myself drifting off into daydream land imagining what sort of donations we would receive. Then I'd kick myself back into reality and remember to not get my hopes too high, just in case. Yup. I'm a cynical kind of gal. I'm …

Meet My Patriot

Sara introduces you to CSM Shelton R. Williamson of the United States Army, the soldier who inspired Patch for Patriots.

If there's one thing I can't be accused of, it's being a wet noodle on issues that I care about. Complacency isn't in my makeup.  So back in April, when I heard stories of my friend sending care packages to her son who is currently stationed in Afghanistan, I felt that all to familiar tingle up my backbone. I found out that our troops, fighting their pants off every dang day, all the way across the world in the most extreme and crappy of circumstances, needed basics like toothpaste, deodorant and razors. What in the heck? Seems crazy, right? It's not. It's very real and it's all very much in demand.  Around the same time I was hitting my stride mastering the world of couponing. Seeing that I could nab all sorts of deals, most of the time …

Help Us Help the Troops in Afghanistan

Patch teams up with Stone Creek Coffee on donation drive for soldiers overseas...but we need your help.

Join Patch and Stone Creek Coffee as we do our part to support American soldiers stationed in Afghanistan. Doing your part is easy and it involves — a free latte. Starting Tuesday, find an item on this list, like a tube of toothpaste, calling card or football, head to Stone Creek Coffee in Shorewood, 4106 N. Oakland Ave., or Whitefish Bay, 601 E. Silver Spring Dr., and hand it to the baristas. They'll brew you up a Stone Creek latte...for free. And we'll send your donation to a soldier stationed in Afghanistan. Make sure to get your donation to our "Patch for Patriots" drive in by July 10, when our effort ends. Patch columnist Sara Conrad is involved with an organization called Adopt A US Soldier. Since mid-April, she has been sending care…

Hi Ryan! Thanks for your comment. We didn't feel the need, but Stone Creek was generous enough to offer...and being a HUGE fan of their lattes, I sure wasn't going to turn it down! :) Of course the simple fact of dropping off needed items is amazing within itself, but if a free latte will get even just one more person to stop by and donate just one more item, I feel it's completely worth every …   more ›
