Shorewood Senior Signs to Play Collegiate Soccer as Badger

The four-star prospect will join the University of Wisconsin women's soccer team this fall after signing a letter of intent.

Shorewood's Sara Waters will hit the soccer field as a Badger this fall after signing a letter of intent to play for the University of Wisconsin in Madison.  While Waters didn't play soccer as a Greyhound, she served as a key offensive threat for the club team, FC Milwaukee, according to the UWBadgers.com. The forward made a name for herself at Elite Clubs National Team events, is rated a four-star prospect by TopDrawerSoccer.com, in addition to earning All-Event Team honors at the 2012 Elite Clubs National League event this past summer.  Team head coach Paula Wilkins said Waters will make the Badgers' attacking group more dynamic. "Her runs off the ball and her ability to attack one-on-one are also very impressive attributes," Wilkins …

Rose Bowl 2013: Local Wisconsin Badgers to Watch

As the Wisconsin Badgers take the field on Tuesday, there are plenty of Milwaukee County residents to root for in the game vs. Stanford.

For Milwaukee County residents, the Rose Bowl is more than just a long-standing tradition of New Year’s Day football. With several local residents playing for the Wisconsin Badgers, there’s plenty to cheer for this year. Joel Stave, a redshirt freshman from Whitnall High School in Greenfield, started six games at quarterback this season before suffering a broken collarbone. He completed 70 of 118 passes for 1,104 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. Stave has been cleared to play in the Rose Bowl but Curt Phillips will start, according to SBNation.com. He was named Academic All-Big Ten.  Rick Wagner, a redshirt senior from West Allis Hale, will be asked to protect whoever is playing quarterback. He started 11 games at left tackle…

Where to Apply to Coach the Wisconsin Badgers

The job is posted, as any other at a public university. But it's unlikely you will be picked by Barry Alvarez to replace Bret Bielema as the school's football coach. Who will be?

Do you think all those years you’ve spent as an unpaid assistant coach for the Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers football qualify you to replace Bret Bielema as the Badgers’ new head coach? You have to apply by Dec. 19. Make sure you have at least three professional references. It won’t happen in time to lead the team through the tunnel at the Rose Bowl — that job belongs to former coach Barry Alvarez — and is unlikely to happen at all for most of us. Who might Alvarez actually choose, after Bielema surprised almost everyone in the state by accepting the head coaching job at Arkansas? Madison radio station Big 1070 reported last week that Chris Petersen of Boise State will interview for the job Monday. Soon after, a Sporting News …

BBB: Rose Bowl Ticket Scams a Thorn in Fans' Sides

As fans look for ticket packages, scammers look to take advantage.

Even though the University of Wisconsin Badgers football team just clinched its berth to the Rose Bowl on Saturday, fans are already scrambling to find ticket packages for the big game. The Better Business Bureau warns fans to be careful of ticket scams. Craigslist, the online classified ad site, and eBay, the online auction site, already have hundreds of listings for Rose Bowl tickets. The Wisconsin BBB wants to remind Badger fans that scams and counterfeit tickets are common, and they should use caution when buying tickets and packages – especially online. The BBB offers these tips to make sure you do not get scammed: For more information or further inquiries, please contact the Wisconsin BBB at www.wisconsin.bbb.org or 414-847-6000 (…

Sometimes I think of how legitimately successful these scammers would be if they used their time and talents for productive, LEGAL endeavors. Boggles the mind.   more ›

Wisconsin's 2011 Sports Success: Deserved Payoff, or Foreboding?

It's been a great run, but will a cleated shoe soon fall?

You can tell a Wisconsin sports fan by the change that's taken place over the last nine months. He smiles a lot. Refuses to change habits (or clothes). Hugs strangers. Reacts to fixing a leaky faucet by either a) giving himself a championship belt, or b) going into "Beast Mode." The last month has seen the bandwagon only pick up speed. The Brewers captured the division, the National League Division Series and Game 1 of the NL Championshp Series. The Packers won a Super Bowl in February, the sixth of an 11-game win streak that continued Sunday night. The Wisconsin Badgers football team is also unbeaten and a contender for the national title. And oh, yes, the Milwaukee Wave won their fifth league championship back in the spring and the …

Busy Labor Day Weekend on the Roads Starts Today

More than 660,000 people expected to travel in Wisconsin over the Labor Day weekend, slightly fewer than last year. But convergence of sporting events and holiday could make Thursday as hairy as any on the roads.

Wisconsin’s Labor Day weekend has an extra day this year, at least from the standpoint of action on the roads. But weather is expected to be great, road construction is limited and gas prices are not expected to spike, so there are plenty of positive factors if you plan to be out and about. Thursday features the Brewers at Miller Park against the rival St. Louis Cardinals at 3 p.m., a Green Bay Packers preseason game at Lambeau Field at 7 p.m. and the Wisconsin Badgers’ first football game of the year vs. UNLV, in Madison and also at 7 p.m. Combine that action with families pulling out of town that evening for their Labor Day getaway — or hurtling up from Illinois for a weekend “Up North” — and the state’s major thoroughfares could be …

Steve, I can't blame gas prices on Obama, for once. Although you would think that since we was so against big oil and Bush's interests he would have regulated them. He does want to raise the federal gas tax. Nevermind, he'll screw this up too.   more ›
