Power Restored in Shorewood after Electricity Knocked Out for 1,800

Efforts to repair the cable were slowed somewhat because it was located underground, making it difficult to pinpoint where the problem occurred.

Updated at 5:15 p.m. Saturday Hundreds of Shorewood homes and businesses were without power for a little more than an hour Saturday, but electricity had been restored throughout the village by 5:15 p.m. When the power was first knocked out shortly before 4 p.m. because of a malfunctioning underground cable, more than 1,800 homes and businesses were affected.  By 5 p.m., about 700 We Energies customers in Shorewood remained without power.  The area affected was near East Olive Street and North Maryland Avenue. Efforts to repair the cable were slowed somewhat because it was located underground, making it difficult to pinpoint where the problem occurred, a We Energies spokeswoman said.

We Energies Continues To Warn Of Scammers

Customers get alert when paying their bill on the utility company's website.

We Energies continues to alert customers of a scam that promises to pay utility bills through federal stimulus money offered by the Obama administration.  The utility company has placed an alert on its Web site telling customers who pay their bill online of the threat.  The notice reads: "Alert: A scam promising federal money to pay utility bills has been discovered. No such program exists, and payments made using bank routing numbers in the scam will be rejected. Please use your current banking information to make online payments." We Energies' spokesperson Cathy Schulze said Tuesday the alert was placed on the site in response to a nationwide scam that arose a few weeks ago.  "Fortunately we did not see a huge impact here with our …

Severe Winds Uproot Tree, Bring Power Outages

No one was harmed when severe winds rolled through Shorewood and uprooted a tree, which came crashing down onto a home in the 2000 block of East Beverly Road Tuesday afternoon. The storm also knocked out power for roughly 900 homes.

Windy conditions rolled through Shorewood Tuesday afternoon, causing more than just area power outages. In the 2000 block of East Beverly Road, a tree was uprooted and crashed into a home. David Freund and his family were in the home Skyping with other family members when the tree came crashing down. "We actually turned the laptop to show them how much the wind was blowing the tree, and next thing we knew," he said. Freund and his family were unharmed and the tree caused only minor damage to the home's gutters and a porch railing. Shorewood Department of Public Works crews were on the scene dismantling the tree and throwing it into a wood chipper. The wind also knocked out power for roughly 900 in Shorewood, 2,633 in Whitefish Bay, 400 in …

Last Chance: Get Caught Up on Energy Bills Before You Get Disconnected

As moratorium on winter heat shutdowns comes to an end, WE Energies is launching a "Stay Connected" campaign for those in severe arrears, who need to set up a payment plan to avoid disconnection as soon as Monday.

If you are not paid up on your We Energies bills, you could face disconnection as soon as Monday. Sunday is the official end of the winter moratorium on heating shutoffs. WE Energies has launched a "Stay Connected" campaign, with phone calls, bill inserts and other messaging alerts to inform customers who are in severe arrears to get caught up on their bills before disconnections begin, according to a press release. “If customers are struggling to pay their energy bills, they should not hesitate to call us,” said Joan Shafer, senior vice president of customer services said in the release. “Our goal is to work with customers so they can maintain their service year-round.” The "Stay Connected" campaign offers minimum and flexible payment …

Time's Up: Winter's Back

After near-record high temps and an above average season, it appears that the party's over. Don't be caught off guard.

Tuesday and Wednesday, it's likely many of you opted for the lighter jacket or sweatshirt when you stepped outdoors, and with temperatures flirting with 50, why not? However, those salad days are coming to an abrupt end as a combination of low pressure systems have finally found our corner of Wisconsin, and will bring 3-6" of snow.  The National Weather Service is issuing a winter weather advisory to be in effect from Thursday morning to Friday morning.  Snowfall during Thursday is expected to start around 7am with heavier amounts falling later during the day, and continuing overnight. The event will take longer than most 'hit-and-run' storms, which has forecasters estimating 2-4" during the daylight hours of Thursday and another 1-2" …

UPDATE: Power Has Been Restored in Most of North Shore

Earlier this morning, more than 1,000 had no electricity.

The thunderstorms that swept through the area knocked out power to more than 1,000 homes and businesses in the North Shore early Monday morning but by 9:30 a.m. most electricity had been restored. We Energies spokesman Barry McNulty said the strong winds and lightning caused the power outages beginning after 6 a.m. As of 7:30 a.m., there were 564 We Energies customers without power in Whitefish Bay, 355 in Brown Deer, 76 in Bayside, 66 in Shorewood and 12 in Fox Point. Two hours later, however, less than two dozen outages were reported in Whitefish Bay. And there was just one customer without power in Bayside and one in Brown Deer. While power has been restored to most homes in Shorewood, police have set up four-way stops at intersections …
