WIAA State Track: Shorewood Sprinters Head to Finals

Two relay teams move to Saturday's finals; pair of distance runners finish 14th and 11th.

Eric Mathews coaches the sprinters for Shorewood High School’s track teams. So when the Greyhounds advanced two sprint relay teams to Saturday’s finals of the WIAA Division 2 state meet, Mathews was understandably mighty pleased. “We’ve been a distance-oriented team in the past eight years or so,” Mathews said. “This year, we’re seeing some great efforts out of the sprinters. This is the first boys sprint relay that we’ve had to state in, I think, six years. The girls 4x400 (also) has had an awesome season. “We’re very pleased with the sprints because they’ve really rounded out our program really well.” Division 2 track events are scheduled to resume Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Watch all running events live here. Both the boys 4x800 (eighth …

Greyhounds Eye Going Low at State Meet

Being pushed should help the 3,200 sectional champion relay team.

It's not hard to run by yourself, but it's hard to run your fastest. The Shorewood girls 3,200 relay squad should get its biggest push of the season at this weekend's WIAA Division 2 state meet in Shorewood, and coach Sarah Kopplin thinks the challenge would make the Greyhounds better. "We have not encountered a race in the (3,200 relay) with the exception of the Arrowhead Invitational where our anchor Kristin Malone has had to race with another anchor leg runner," Kopplin wrote in an e-mail this week. "This will be the case this week and I am excited to see what she can do in that situation." The Greyhounds won the sectional in 9:52.34 and are seeded 12th. (See all the seed times here.) Though the top spot is likely out of reach — …
