Out of 14 nominations for the statewide honor, Shorewood High School's theater program received awards for its spring production Spring Awakening — a rock adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s 1891 expressionist play, which tells the story of 19th century German teenagers facing issues related to sexuality. Shorewood Drama also fielded one award, from 10 nominations, for its winter musical Godspell. The musical by Stephen Schwartz is a modern account of the Gospel according to St. Matthew. Shorewood High School drama students rehearsed this week as they prepared for six performances of the controversial musical.
Shorewood Drama's production of Spring Awakening opens Friday in the high school auditorium. Ticket information is available here; they run $10 for adults and $5 for students. The rock adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s 1891 expressionist play tells the story of 19th century German teenagers facing issues related to their sexuality. The controversial, Tony Award-winning musical hit Broadway in 2006. It had been banned in Germany (and in the United States) due to its controversial subject matter. It deals with taboo topics like suicide, teen pregnancy, masturbation and sexual assault. Drama students will put on a rendition of the Tony award-winning Nov. 1 through 4 in the Shorewood High School auditorium.
Shorewood High School drama students will bring you the comedy, Lend Me a Tenor, Nov. 1 through 4. Shows start at 7 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Lend Me a Tenor is a Tony award-winning comedy by Ken Ludwig. Set in September 1934, the general manager of the Cleveland Opera Company, Saunders, is preparing for the performance of the famous Tito Morelli. But alas, through an odd turn of events, Tito turns out to be a no-show, and Saunders gives the part to his assistant, Max. Max succeeds as Morelli, but suddenly the real Morelli shows up, and soon two Titos are running around in costume, along with two women in lingerie that believe they are with the real Tito Morelli. The Shorewood Senior Resource Center will present a series of programs about operatic adaptations of the works of William Shakespeare. The first of four classes will be held Nov. 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. on the ground floor of the Shorewood Village Center, 2010 E. Shorewood Blvd. During the course of these four sessions the presenter, Corliss Phillabaum, will discuss operatic adaptations of "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "Romeo and Juliet," "The Merry Wives of Windsor," "Hamlet" and even a classic Broadway musical based on "The Taming of the Shrew." An armed gunman raided a movie theater in Colorado during a midnight showing of the new Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises," killing at least 12 people and wounding many more.
