Faces of Shorewood

Q&A: New Shorewood Superintendent Martin Lexmond

Shorewood Patch sat down with Lexmond for a Q&A on how he’s preparing for his new role and the year ahead.

Sept. 4 will mark the first day of school in Shorewood, but also new Superintendent Martin Lexmond’s first year in the district. Shorewood Patch sat down with Lexmond for a Q&A on how he’s preparing for his new role and the year ahead. Why Shorewood? I’ve watched Shorewood from a distance for a longtime. I’ve worked in Milwaukee Public Schools and had the opportunity to become a high school principal, and because of another opportunity decided to stay in Milwaukee doing really interesting work and so Shorewood has always been on my radar. I spent two years in Kohler. If it had not been for the Shorewood opening, I would still be in Kohler. I wasn’t looking for a job, I was very happy in Kohler. I had two really good years, and it was a …

Shorewood School Board OKs Contract for New Superintendent Martin Lexmond

Officials approved a two-year contract with a $150,000 annual salary, along with a minimum 1.5 percent increase in the second year and first extension, for new Shorewood superintendent Martin Lexmond.

The Shorewood School Board put the final stamp on Martin Lexmond taking the helm as superintendent, unanimously approving a two-year pact Tuesday. The contract, which covers the 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years, calls for a $150,000 salary and no less than a 1.5 percent increase after the first year, and the first extension of the contract. The contract goes into effect on July 1, when Lexmond takes over. "I'm really looking forward to getting started," Lexmond said Tuesday. "Just being present and interacting with teachers, and interacting with the community really starts the learning process and even adds to the excitement." Lexmond was selected as Shorewood's next school chief early last week, after a four-month search. He comes from …

I own my own business. The more I sell the more I make. Thus, by definition I am paid EXACTLY what I am worth. I work about 70 hours a week. I work at least 6 days a week. In the past I always worked job where there was a salary and extensive commission and/or bonuses. Those who were more valued to the company were compensated more. That is the crux of my original comment. Lexmond is worth more …   more ›

Kohler's Lexmond Tapped as Shorewood's Next School Chief

Lexmond, superintendent and principal at Kohler Public Schools for the past two years, beat out current Lake Bluff Elementary School Principal Kirk Juffer for the post.

After a four-month search, school officials announced Martin Lexmond will take over as superintendent of the Shorewood School District this summer. “It is truly humbling to have an opportunity to serve the Shorewood community. Shorewood is known and respected for its commitment to student excellence,” Lexmond said in a prepared statement issued by the district. “I am excited to lead a team with such an enthusiasm for the education of its children.” Lexmond, superintendent and principal at Kohler Public Schools for the past two years, beat out current Lake Bluff Elementary School Principal Kirk Juffer for the post. He'll take over as head of Shorewood schools on July 1. Lexmond has previously been the director of curriculum and instruction …

Dave, I wondered about that too, but when I heard his story of why he made the changes he did--and why he's so eager to get into Shorewood and has been for a long time--the multiple job changes didn't bother me or make me think we're just a temporary gig. Two things that stuck out for me in the listening sessions: his understanding that for some districts, arts are a priority, and second, his …   more ›

School Officials to Interview Six Candidates for Shorewood School Chief

Officials say they will present two to three candidates to the community in a few weeks after interviewing six in closed session next week.

Residents and stakeholders will soon learn the names of those in the running to replace Superintendent of Shorewood schools Blane McCann. School officials say the consultant hired to aid the search for a new chief has selected six candidates from a pool of 39 applicants. The School Board will conduct interviews in closed session on Wednesday and Friday and whittle the group to two or three. The remaining candidates will tour the district's four schools over a two-day period and meet with different groups including adminstrators, teachers and citizens. An open meeting is planned for Monday to determine a timeline for the meetings. School Board President Rob Reinhoffer said the plan is to name the district's next superintendent by the end of…

Omaha School District Picks McCann as Its Next Superintendent

After retiring from head of Shorewood schools, McCann will continue his career in education as the next chief of Westside Community Schools in Nebraska.

Shorewood Superintendent Blane McCann won’t remain retired for long as he was tapped Monday to be the next chief of a school system in Omaha, NE. School officials at Westside Community Schools voted 4-2 to approve McCann to fill their empty superintendent post, according to the Omaha World-Herald. McCann, who announced Jan. 9 he would retire at the end of the current school year, was one of five candidates interviewed for the position. The district is located “in the heart of Omaha” and was looking to replace its  current superintendent, Jacquie Estee, who announced in August she would retire at the end of this school year. Westside is the third largest district in the city of Omaha, a 13-school system and a highly-acclaimed public school …

Very interesting on a few points: 1. Hiring anyone on a 4-2 vote WILL NOT lead to good things. There are already two people on the board that do not like the choice. 2. Glad he was able to find something. This will make the hit on the Shorewood taxpayers are minimal as possible. 3. ANOTHER example of double dipping (albeit not completely in WI) by school employees.   more ›

District Hires Consulting Firm to Aid in Superintendent Search

At a base fee of $11,500, Illinois-based firm BWP and Associates will build a profile of an ideal candidate for Shorewood, then conduct a regional and nationwide search.

The search for a new head of Shorewood schools is officially on with officials hiring a recruiter Tuesday to help in the hunt. Illinois-based consulting firm BWP and Associates will conduct the search for candidates to serve as Shorewood’s next superintendent, after current school chief Blane McCann announced he would retire this summer. The firm was hired at a base fee of $11,500, but there could be additional expenses incurred by the district, including an estimated $1,500 to $3,200 for designing and printing of recruiting brochures and $3,200 to $4,700 for advertisements in regional and national publications and websites, with cost depending on the size, placement and number of advertisements. Board member Colin Plese said the board was…

McCann Interviewed for Superintendent Post in Omaha

A little more than a week after he announced his retirement, the head of Shorewood schools is in the running for another job.

Shorewood Superintendent Blane McCann is among five candidates in the running to head a school district in Omaha, Nebraska. McCann announced early last week he would retire at the end of the school year, and said he appreciated the "chance to purse other interests and opportunities in the field of education." He is listed as a candidate on the Westside Community School District’s website, and interviewed with the district’s School Board on Wednesday for 90 minutes, the Omaha World-Herald reports. The district is located “in the heart of Omaha” and is looking for a replacement for its current superintendent, Jacquie Estee, who announced in August she would retire at the end of this school year. Candidates took turns touring district schools…

While there's something to be said for moving on, there are also at least 52,000 reasons to take a closer look at what went on and, to the extent anything went wrong, seek out ways to avoid such mistakes in the future. As a side note, I highly doubt that the fact that McCann is getting paid handsomely to do just what he's been doing for some time--seeking work elsewhere--will scare people away …   more ›

Did the Shorewood School Board Force McCann to Retire?

Board members say it's completely inaccurate to say they had a forceful hand in the superintendent's decision to retire; but some parents and residents aren't buying it.

Superintendent Blane McCann said it was simply time to move forward in announcing his decision to retire this summer. But some in the community believe there's more going on behind the scenes, and accusations surfaced publicly at Tuesday's School Board meeting. Former School Board member John Carlton told Patch Tuesday he was told by some of the board and McCann that board members Colin Plese, Michael Mishlove and Rob Reinhoffer refused to negotiate with him on a new contract, forcing him into retirement. "They have forced the retirement of an excellent superintendent," Carlton said. "My concern is, the way that this has gone down may cause us to lose other administrators. Good administrators. "I don't know why they thought this was …

While I wish Dr. McCann well, I am deeply saddened for the community. He is a true leader and passionate about educating students. This is an unnecessary loss. To the school board: your decisions have a lasting impact on all of the students in this community. Please start to put your personal and political agendas aside and fulfill your mission. Own your decisions. True leaders do not behave this…   more ›
