The WNS Storm co-op hockey team lost 2-1 to Eau Claire Memorial in a quarterfinal game Thursday night.
After qualifying for the state tournament for the first time in WNS hockey history, the Whitefish Bay-Nicolet-Shorewood co-op hockey team's season finally came to an end after a bittersweet loss in the first round of the state tournament Thursday night. The Storm (22-5-1) lost 2-1 to Eau Claire Memorial (21-6-1) in a quarterfinal game at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. Eau Claire's Charlie Graaskamp scored the first goal 4:06 into the second quarter. Thomas Aiken evened it up 8:30 in the second quarter. Eau Claire's Jacob Bresser scored the winning goal 1:16 into the third quarter. The Pewaukee Pirates out shot Shorewood in a penalty shootout round, following two scoreless overtime periods.
The Greyhounds' state tournament dreams were dashed by Pewaukee Saturday, after the two played to a draw and entered a penalty shootout round. The two met in the WIAA Division 2 boys soccer sectional finals in Whitewater. After two scoreless halves, the teams played two overtime periods in which neither was able to sneak a goal in. In a penalty shootout round, Pewaukee out shot the Greyhounds 4-2, to move on to the state tournament. "If we could have had five more minutes on the field, instead of a shootout, I think it would have been a different outcome," head coach Aron Gentry said. Shorewood secured a spot in the WIAA sectional finals Thursday night, after dominating the Whippets Thursday night 5-1. They have a chance to reach state for the first time since 2004.
The rain came in sideways all night, but it didn't seem to bother the Greyhounds Thursday as they cruised to an easy victory over Whitewater and advanced to the sectional finals round of the Division 2 WIAA playoffs. After running into the Catholic Memorial last year in regionals, Shorewood is just one win away from its first state tournament berth since 2004. That year, the Greyhounds lost in the state championship game. Thursday night, Shorewood scored early and often. Its first goal came just inside the 4-minute mark, courtesy of midfielder Josh Landers. The Greyhounds ended the first half with three goals, shutting out the Whippets.
