Girls soccer team remain undefeated in Woodland Conference play, after playing to a tie against New Berlin Eisenhower.
Here is a roundup of Shorewood High School sports courtesy of Athletic Director Bill Haury: Girl’s Softball – Monday, the teams played only the second game of the season, the first conference game against a very strong Whitnall team. While the game ended in five innings with Whitnall winning 14-1, an important statistic was that the Shorewood girls had no errors. The Whitnall team generated its own offense off strong hitting. There were no big innings for the Falcons, as they had to produce each run with hitting and not off Shorewood mistakes. Meredith Behm gave the team its lone run as she went 1-2 with a double that scored the Shorewood run. Cindy Schuelke pitched two innings and Celeste Carroll pitched three. With Shorewood High School Athletic Director Bill Haury, who many credit with turning around a struggling sports program in the district, set to retire at the end of the school year, boosters are concerned about attracting the right candidate.
Many who are active in Shorewood High School athletics — coaches, boosters — credit Athletic Director Bill Haury with turning around a struggling sports program in the district. After seven years at the helm, programs like the girls basketball team, which lost 45 games in a row over four seasons, have finally realized success under Haury. "I've coached boys basketball for 30 years, in the city conference, and I've seen a lot of ADs," boys basketball head coach Phil Jones said. "And I'd have to say Bill is the best that I've seen." After being invited to U.S. Olympic Trials last year and propelling the girls high school swim team to a state title, the Shorewood High School junior Rachel Munson is in Colorado Springs training with the top teenaged swimmers in the nation.
Shorewood standout Rachel Munson could be swimming alongside 11-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte this weekend. She was one of the youngest invited to compete in U.S. Olympic Trials for a chance to compete in the 2012 London Olympics, and propelled the Shorewood High School girls swim team to its seventh state title this fall with a record-breaking 1:01.37 effort. Now, Rachel is on to the next big thing. The Shorewood High School junior left the village Thursday for a Colorado Springs Olympic training facility, to join the top swimmers in the nation at an exclusive and intensive training camp. The No. 1 ranked player in the Midwest region, Louis Bennett II, will play under his father as a midfielder on the Golden Eagles this spring.
Shorewood High School alumnus Louis Bennett II will join the Marquette University soccer team this spring — and play under his father — as the highest-rated recruit in the program's history. The 5-foot-9 midfielder has been labeled the No. 1 player in the Midwest region, and is ranked No. 33 nationally at his position and No. 65 overall in the “IMG Academy Top 150” for the class of 2013, as compiled by TopDrawerSoccer. Bennett, who comes to the Golden Eagles from the Chicago Fire Academy to play collegiately under his father, graduated from SHS in December and joins Marquette as a freshman. After 25 years in Shorewood schools, Bill Haury is retiring. The School Board will consider his retirement request Tuesday night.
When school lets out for summer break, Bill Haury will say goodbye for good after 25 years in the Shorewood School District. Haury has served in different roles in the district over the more than two decades, most recently as dean of students and district athletic director. "... I would be interested in continuing to serve as 7-12 Director of Athletics, but after 8.5 years of fulfilling what were formally two full-time positions, I no longer have the motivation and energy to continue doing what is required in meeting the demands of these combined administrative positions," Haury said in a letter to the School Board. Organized by the booster club, the fair could bring in $20,000 for the school district.
At the 32nd annual Arts and Crafts Fair Sunday, 130 artists will sell their wares at Shorewood High School in the biggest Shorewood Booster Club fundraiser that goes toward the salary for the athletic trainer, sports uniforms and other supplies. Booster Club Fundraiser and Membership Chair Bonnie Adams said she hopes the event this year will bring in about $20,000. They have already collected more than $11,000 in rentals from the vendors, and hope to have over 2,000 people paying admission into the fair at $4 each. A Culvers lunch, silent auction and spirit wear sale will also bring in revenue. The wide variety of vendors from throughout the Midwest will sell clothing, artwork, food, furniture and other items. A 49-6 loss to Milwaukee Riverside Friday night didn't diminish the significance of Messmer/Shorewood's first playoff appearance since 1981.
The Messmer/Shorewood football team fell 49-6 to Milwaukee Riverside Friday night at Pulaski Stadium in WIAA regional round playoff action. Riverside jumped out to an early lead with two first quarter touchdowns and didn't let up, scoring 35 first half points. Messwood was able to avoid the shutout with Taylor Dennis connecting with Jonathan Carson for a 15-yard touchdown pass with less than a minute left in the game. However, the result of Friday night’s game didn’t diminish what Messwood’s playoff berth meant to the fans, coaches and players. Shorewood had to make a court challenge to a WIAA rule that labeled them ineligible for the playoffs.
