The business is expected to sign a seven-year lease on the 9,200-square-foot space. Erik Saltvold, the owner of the …

New Restaurant Will Fill Former El Guapo's Space in Whitefish Bay

A local restauranteur has stepped up to open The Bay, a community-based restaurant and bar on Silver Spring Drive.

After years of hearing his neighbors begging for a restaurant on Silver Spring Drive, Whitefish Bay resident and restauranteur Paul Berlin decided to step up to the plate. Berlin is one of two experienced restauranteurs behind The Bay, a full-service restaurant and bar that expects to fill the former El Guapo's spaceby March or April. With a slogan of "By the Bay for the Bay," Berlin said the restaurant "will be connected to the community through schools, groups, local businesses and ownership."  Berlin said he decided to start the restaurant because he and his neighbors were tired of not seeing a restaurant in Whitefish Bay. "Being Bay residents, I want to be able to walk up Silver Spring and do all the things we want to do, but one of …

New Wine and Tapas Bar Coming to Whitefish Bay

After receiving village approval, the aspiring restaurant owner now sets her sights on opening in the former Cutter's barbershop by March 1.

Silver Spring Drive could finally get the wining and dining it has been asking for over the last couple years. Restaurateur Rose Niles approached village officials Tuesday night about opening a new wine and tapas bar at the space previously occupied by Cutters barbershop at 402 E. Silver Spring. The restaurant would serve soups, paninis and some small plate options for lunch. For dinner, it would offer Italian food and Spanish small plate dishes, which have gained popularity in recent years. Niles said she also hopes to serve brunch on Saturday and Sunday. "We want to create a warm, but still very trendy, atmosphere," Niles said. "Somewhere people can come in have a nice glass of wine or an import beer, and enjoy small plate dining." Niles…

Absolutely Annoyed

Absolutely Fabulous is Absolutely Idiotic. The restaurant isn't even built and she's bankrupting them with unbudgeted for grease traps and fume hoods. She's criticizing the non-existent plastic chairs and cheap umbrellas. And, oh, the noise this restaurant that isnt there yet causes. I beg you to sit on your hands and stop typing. Please. Leave the restaurant you've never been to and know nothing…   more ›

CherryBerry is the second national frozen yogurt chain to open its doors on Silver Spring Drive in the last several months.

Silver Spring Dr. CherryBerry is a national self-serve frozen yogurt chain offering over 50 rotating varieties of frozen yogurt flavors with over 50 toppings to add on. CherryBerry opened its first store in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma in 2010 and has rapidly expanded to over 100 locations nationwide. No More Fun and Games at ThinkTOYS

ThinkTOYS is closing Tuesday. In the meantime, everything in the store is 25 percent off.

The popular ThinkTOYS toy store on Silver Spring Drive is closing its doors after just over a year in business. After opening its first location at Mayfair Mall, ThinkTOYS opened its Whitefish Bay location at 308 E. Silver Spring Dr. in July 2011. The store quickly became an after-school favorite for younger kids in Whitefish Bay, offering Legos, puzzles, board games, educational toys and other unique toy varieties. The Mayfair store closed several months ago. ThinkTOYS owner Michael Morelli said the store's sales were not the reason behind his decision to close the Whitefish Bay store. "It doesn't make sense for us at least to pay huge rents when you can take advantage of the web," he said in an email. "Far less work, less overhead, …

Harpo's Joins Fight Against Chemotherapy Hair Loss

The Whitefish Bay salon hopes to raise $5,000 for cold cap therapy equipment that could help local chemotherapy patients retain their hair.

One of the most emotional moments of Peggy Dixon's career as a hair stylist is when a person recently diagnosed with cancer comes to her salon and asks to have their hair cut before chemotherapy. The staff of Harpo's will usually arrange for a time before or after normal salon hours for the customer to come in and have their hair cut in privacy. Most of the time, Dixon will give women a short pixie cut - just enough so that they do not have a traumatic experience of losing large chunks of hair in the shower. For some patients, seeing that much hair fall to the ground is the second-most emotional part of being diagnosed with cancer. "There is nothing worse than chopping their hair off," Dixon said. "There are so many emotions that come out …

Former Green Bay Packers player William Henderson launched Sweet Frog frozen yogurt Monday afternoon, offering healthy snacks, a family atmosphere and a charitable commitment to Whitefish Bay organizations.

All day long Monday, kids and young families popped their heads into Silver Spring Drive's new frozen yogurt business: "Are you open?" After months of anticipation, Sweet Frog franchise operator and former Green Bay Packers fullback William Henderson was finally able to open his doors and start serving frozen yogurt in the space previously occupied by What's Poppin' at 404 E. Silver Spring Dr. Henderson opened his first Sweet Frog franchise in Plover, near Stevens Point, about a month ago. He also plans to launch a store in Brookfield's Sendik's Town Centre in October, as well as another location in DePere. Henderson said he plans to open eight locations in Wisconsin and Illinois by February. Henderson chose Silver Spring Drive because it …

Chain wants to open first North Shore shop in new retail development on Silver Spring Drive at Bay Ridge Avenue.

Dunkin' Donuts would like to open its first North Shore location in the ground floor of a new retail center under construction on Silver Spring Drive at Bay Ridge Avenue. The Whitefish Bay Plan Commission will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Monday regarding the businesss' request to obtain a conditional use permit in the upcoming Baysider Retail Center at 106 W. Silver Spring Drive, just east of the future PNC Bank building. The proposed retail building is expected to house four total retailers, and Dunkin' Donuts is seeking to locate on the east end. These anti-Dunkin comments are driving me nuts. Dunkin' Donuts core business these days is coffee & other beverages. They still sell donuts, but their market niche is coffee...ask anyone who's ever spent any time in New England, where there's more DDs than Starbucks. I love DD coffee, and regularly visit the DD location on Wisconsin Avenue. It would be great to have a location here in WFB. I'm …   more ›

Village Board Grants Expanded Hours to Anytime Fitness

Fitness center is considering the purchase of the building currently occupied by Elements East.

The Whitefish Bay Village Board Monday granted Anytime Fitness an exception to operate outside of the village's standard retail hours, meaning the fitness franchise will move forward with the purchase of the current Elements East building at 109 E. Silver Spring Dr. Under the Whitefish Bay zoning code, the club would only be able to operate from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., which franchise owner John Mathie said would not be acceptable. The Village Board agreed in a 6-1 vote to allow the business to operate from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m every day, which came on a recommendation from the Plan Commission. In addition to the Shorewood branch at Oakland Avenue and Capitol Drive, Anytime Fitness also has franchises on Farwell Avenue in Milwaukee and in Wauwatosa …

If Anytime is allowed to open at 5 am, there's no good reason for not letting the JCC or Fitness Together open at 5. I agree with Roemer that allowing the special time for Anytime puts the other two at a competitive disadvantage. Any parking at Anytime will be as close or closer to any residences as the JCC parking lot is to any, so arguing that expanding its hours could create problems for the …   more ›
