The 2013-2014 school calendar has been set, which means you can start planning your family's vacations for winter break and spring break.
The Shorewood School Board has set the district’s 2013-14 calendar. School will begin Sept. 3, the day after Labor Day, and will wrap up on June 12, 2014. Winter break is scheduled from Dec. 23 to Jan. 1, and spring break is scheduled from March 31 to April 4. Spring break falls on the same week for all North Shore schools, except for Shorewood, according to the School Board. The calendar was initially approved Feb. 12, but brought back Tuesday to make minor revisions. That's when officials realized other districts inadvertently chose the same week for spring break. In February, school officials discussed at length aligning spring break with area schools to avoid hardships for families with children in different districts. Superintendent …

Rather than simply have the School Board sign a letter critical of the state of funding of traditional public schools, officials are looking to launch a campaign to send a significant, united message to the state.
Shorewood schools want to send a big message to Gov. Scott Walker this time. Two years ago, the Shorewood School Board sent a letter to state lawmakers voicing their opposition to Act 10 and other school-related budget measures. This year rather than simply having the five-member board sign a letter critical of the state of funding of public schools, officials want to launch a grassroots campaign to generate energy in the village and send a significant, unified message to Madison. “We could do something a little bit unique,” Superintendent Martin Lexmond said. “Most districts have really taken the approach of the board signing the letter; it’s been the standard approach. But if we show up with a 1,000 signatures, it will get a different …
