Young Shorewood Artists' Murals to be Auctioned

Shorewood schools art students combined creative forces Monday to craft murals to be auctioned at the Shorewood Men's Club annual BBQ next month.

Young Shorewood artists combined creative forces Monday to craft murals to be auctioned at the Shorewood Men's Club annual BBQ next month.  The students conceived the concept for the mural's design and then paired up with an older student with similar interests.  Shorewood High School freshman Celeste Carroll, for example, teamed up with Atwater Elementary School fifth grader Juliet Loomis to paint a mural on travel. “We’re trying to incorporate the theme of travel and incorporate all of the images together,” Carroll said. Loomis said, “I like how we get to paint and express ourselves,” Loomis said. The conference, which lasted throughout the day, was held in the SHS North Gym and was organized by all of the district’s art teachers. The …

UWM Assistant Athletic Director Tapped to Head Up SHS Sports

After fielding more than 100 candidates, the district chose LeVar Ridgeway to fill retiring district Athletic Director Bill Haury's shoes next school year.

LeVar Ridgeway — current assistant athletic director at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee — will head up Shorewood athletics next school year after the School Board approved his hiring Tuesday night.  Ridgeway will oversee Shorewood High School and Intermediate School athletics next year, with a salary of $50,000, not including a fringe benefits package. The School Board budgeted $45,000 for the position, but Superintendent Martin Lexmond said as the district has gone through the hiring process for other staff members in recent months, salaries have balanced out. Athletic boosters had asked for school officials to consider boosting the budgeted salary to attract more talented candidates.  Ridgeway has spent the past 11 years in UWM …

Walker, State GOP Attempting to Defund Public Schools, Panel Argues

A forum led by Rep. Sandy Pasch cast a bleak forecast of funding of public education under Gov. Scott Walker's 2013-15 budget proposal.

State Republican lawmakers and Gov. Scott Walker are systemically attempting to defund public schools in Wisconsin, a panel led by Rep. Sandy Pasch said Sunday afternoon.  The forum, hosted by progressive group Grassroots Northshore at Shorewood's North Shore Presbyterian Church, fielded about 65 and cast a bleak forecast of funding of pubic schools under Walker's 2013-15 budget proposal. The governor’s budget includes a freeze of the revenue limit for pubic school districts, a slight increase in state aid, and an expansion of the voucher system to nine schools in Milwaukee and Waukesha, allowing students to attend private schools in lieu of underperforming public schools. It also includes additional funding for high-performing districts…

Marquette Professor Moron-to Cheryl Maranto takes the cake and makes not sending my children to Marquette much easier. Cheryl Maranto actually said this, "Last I knew, public education was supposed to be about educating children and not funding property tax relief.". Cheryl Maranto, Professor at Marquette University, thinks and probably teaches Tax Relief is paid by public education. Professor …   more ›

Student-Staff Ratios at Shorewood Schools and How They Compare

See how the number of students per staff member in the Shorewood School District stacks up against nearby districts and the state.

One thing that always comes up when districts talk about laying off staff, is the student-staff ratio. In general, according to the non-profit group Class Size Matters, a lower ratio is considered beneficial, providing for smaller class sizes and giving students more opportunity for attention from teachers.  There were 870,470 students enrolled in Wisconsin public and charter schools in the 2011-12 school year. Those schools employed 3,497 administrators, 31,532 aides and support staff, and 65,446 licensed staff members. (All employment numbers are full-time equivalents; meaning two half-time staff members would count as one.) Average staff-student ratios are as follows: 249 students per administrator, 28 students per aide/support staff, …

How Much Do School Administrators Make?

Local administrator salaries are in line with other county districts. Use our interactive database to see which school administrators are the highest and lowest paid throughout the state of Wisconsin.

School administrator salaries in the Shorewood School District are slightly below those in other North Shore districts, according to data compiled by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. The numbers are from salary information released on the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction's website. The data is from the 2011-12 school year. This database will allow you to search administrative salaries only in the 424 districts statewide. New Shorewood Superintendent Martin Lexmond's earnings are not available in the database, but his salary in his first year is $150,000, and fringe benefits are not available. Previous school chief Blane McCann, with 31 years of experience, was paid $152,250 and a $38,327 fringe benefit package. Accounting 'Discrepancy' Found Within Shorewood Band Booster Accounts

Police have been notified of an accounting discrepancy within the club's financials. A school district statement said a member in a leadership role has claimed responsibility, though the person has not been identified and the size of the error is unclear.

The Shorewood School District has been notified of an accounting discrepancy in the Band Parents Booster Club, according to a statement from the district. The statement noted that a police investigation has begun, though Shorewood Police said Wednesday they have been contacted but an investigation has not started. An individual in a leadership role has accepted responsibility for the irregularity within the club's accounts, according to a statement from the school district. The size of the error is unclear and the individual responsible has not been identified. A club representative did not return a message seeking comment Wednesday. The booster club is a separate entity from the district, but school officials said they will support the …

If This Mom Van's a Rockin, Don't Come A Knockin: It's Back to School

Life's just one big party now that the kids are in school, right? Shorewood pros explain the secrets to parental sanity.

So despite the lack of fanfare — literally, no marching band, no honking parade, little toilet paper — school started this week. Oh how relaxed and happy all us parents are now that the kids are in school, and it is true — there is love in the air for the dear children, the teachers, the crossing guards, the neighbors, as well as fellow man and the universe.   And hey, I will admit it, I did sneak away yesterday and stay in Chicago after an appointment, and I had thoughts about other things besides getting supplies or clothes for the kids for school. I walked around. I stood and absorbed things other than myself, other than things on my worn list of supplies. My senses were overwhelmed in a good way. Layers of sound washed over me and …

Back when I was a kid, I don't think my mom's time was quite so structured while we were in school. Granted, I lived in an area with a school bus but with the exception of really little kids isn't Shorewood a walkable community? I think it's sad for both parents and children that the time honored ritual of walking home from school has come to pass. The play date thing has always perplexed me. We …   more ›

That New Crayon Smell

Scoop up savings on school supplies this weekend but keep your summer attitude.

The innocent new-eraser smell has been replaced. On the shelves now at Walgreens are scented notebooks and Justin Bieber folders, and I'm not sure that the moniker "Smart Buy" that shows you the price is really just that. Like the cicadas that came early, and the leaves I have to rake off of my green, unripe hard tomatoes, fall seems to want to come early this year. Life seems to be syncopated this summer. Cart coming before the horse. So of course it’s only natural the stores would have their school supply sales this weekend. Here’s what you need to know, Shorewood parents, though you don’t need to think about it too hard. There are lists, and there are sales. Get it done quickly, like a Band-Aid (add to list) and then you can go to the …

A Major Gift from Mr. Fish

A random fish story at a bar turns into heartwarming memory of a fifth grade teacher at Lake Bluff School.

So I thought I was so up on Shorewood news. Well, I had my fish handed to me on a platter this week when Ann Furlong and two of her former students from the Class of ’82 were busy collating newsletters for me at the Village Pub. Now you really know this is a small town. You walk into a bar with a box of collating and labeling to do for a school-related thing; the ladies at the next table grab stacks while they enjoy their post-softball pitcher of another sort; the really familiar-looking one turns out to be your committee-mate’s second-grade teacher, who also remembers you and most of the people you knew, including the detail that you didn’t start with the other kids until third grade when you transferred in; and that fact causes a brief …

Shorewood School Board OKs Contract for New Superintendent Martin Lexmond

Officials approved a two-year contract with a $150,000 annual salary, along with a minimum 1.5 percent increase in the second year and first extension, for new Shorewood superintendent Martin Lexmond.

The Shorewood School Board put the final stamp on Martin Lexmond taking the helm as superintendent, unanimously approving a two-year pact Tuesday. The contract, which covers the 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years, calls for a $150,000 salary and no less than a 1.5 percent increase after the first year, and the first extension of the contract. The contract goes into effect on July 1, when Lexmond takes over. "I'm really looking forward to getting started," Lexmond said Tuesday. "Just being present and interacting with teachers, and interacting with the community really starts the learning process and even adds to the excitement." Lexmond was selected as Shorewood's next school chief early last week, after a four-month search. He comes from …

I own my own business. The more I sell the more I make. Thus, by definition I am paid EXACTLY what I am worth. I work about 70 hours a week. I work at least 6 days a week. In the past I always worked job where there was a salary and extensive commission and/or bonuses. Those who were more valued to the company were compensated more. That is the crux of my original comment. Lexmond is worth more …   more ›
