Former Secretary Bilked District by Circumventing Approval Process, Officials Say

Superintendent Martin Lexmond said no services to students were limited, changed or compromised as a result of the embezzlement of more than $300,000 in special education funds.

Former Shorewood secretary Donna Sternke created convincing, bogus invoices and found a way to circumvent the approval process, avoiding suspicion over the 13 years she allegedly stole $310,000 in special education funds from the district, officials say.  “The district worked with three independent auditing companies from 1998 through 2011,” Lexmond said, in a prepared statement Tuesday. “During this time, each company performed an annual audit of the district’s financial accounts, including the funds Ms. Sternke embezzled from, but did not find anything suspicious as it appears Ms. Sternke created false invoices and receipts that were very convincing.” Sternke was charged last week in federal court with issuing unauthorized checks …

There was a board member who recently resigned, who, after the days/minutes fiasco, repeatedly urged McCann to compile a checklist of Wisconsin statutes applicable to schools and ensure that school administrators knew the statutes that applied to them. McCann wouldn't do it. None of the other board members supported that board member's efforts to get the district administrators knowledgable about…   more ›

Student-Staff Ratios at Shorewood Schools and How They Compare

See how the number of students per staff member in the Shorewood School District stacks up against nearby districts and the state.

One thing that always comes up when districts talk about laying off staff, is the student-staff ratio. In general, according to the non-profit group Class Size Matters, a lower ratio is considered beneficial, providing for smaller class sizes and giving students more opportunity for attention from teachers.  There were 870,470 students enrolled in Wisconsin public and charter schools in the 2011-12 school year. Those schools employed 3,497 administrators, 31,532 aides and support staff, and 65,446 licensed staff members. (All employment numbers are full-time equivalents; meaning two half-time staff members would count as one.) Average staff-student ratios are as follows: 249 students per administrator, 28 students per aide/support staff, …

Former School Secretary Stole $310K In Special Ed Funds, Feds Say

Over the course of 13 years, federal investigators say the secretary stole more than $300,000 and used it to buy TVs, household items and vacations for her family.

SHOREWOOD, WI -- A former Shorewood School District secretary has been charged with embezzling more than $300,000 in federal special education funds to buy TVs, household items and vacations for her family. Donna Sternke was charged this week in federal court with issuing unauthorized checks totaling $310,263 over 13 years — from January 1998 to June 2011. In June 2011, the district discovered the unexplained purchase of gift cards for Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells, and she was allowed to resign from her position, according to documents filed in federal court. In October 2012, she admitted to federal investigators to stealing the money. And this week she reached a plea agreement with prosecutors. If convicted, Sternke could face a …

To be fair Jory, WI schools on average are not "lousy". Go do some traveling in the south and you'll find that we have it pretty good up here. Probably not for much longer with Walker in office, though.   more ›

Shorewood 2013-14 School District Calendar Set

The 2013-2014 school calendar has been set, which means you can start planning your family's vacations for winter break and spring break.

The Shorewood School Board has set the district’s 2013-14 calendar. School will begin Sept. 3, the day after Labor Day, and will wrap up on June 12, 2014. Winter break is scheduled from Dec. 23 to Jan. 1, and spring break is scheduled from March 31 to April 4. Spring break falls on the same week for all North Shore schools, except for Shorewood, according to the School Board. The calendar was initially approved Feb. 12, but brought back Tuesday to make minor revisions. That's when officials realized other districts inadvertently chose the same week for spring break. In February, school officials discussed at length aligning spring break with area schools to avoid hardships for families with children in different districts. Superintendent …

That's a good point about the winter break not ending at the end of the quarter. It looks like students will return from winter break with roughly three weeks left in the quarter, though the district likely doesn't have much control over when that happens since it revolves around Christmas/New Years. If the district went with April 14-21 for spring break, there would be two weeks of classes in …   more ›
