Trustees Hope Security Gate Deters Atwater Beach Trespassers

After years of resident complaints over trespassers, discussion came to a head Monday when officials decided on a new place for a security gate at Atwater Beach and Park.

Following years of discussion and complaints from North Lake Drive residents of trespassing onto privately owned land adjacent to Atwater Beach, village officials on Monday gave the go-ahead for a new security gate at Atwater Park. Fences running along the north and south edge of Atwater Beach were taken down in 2009. The village’s Parks Commission — citing a citizen group's concern that the ugly chain-linked barrier ruined the aesthetics on the beach and officials saying it was falling apart — approved their removal. Soon after, Lake Drive residents started complaining of an increase in crime, and that trespassers became a daily occurrence on their private property. Other problems reported included underage drinking, drug use, littering, …

Shame on Shorewood for installing the ugly security fence at the top of Atwater Beach. After the beautiful restoration finally completed, this fence is a scar that takes away the charm and only adds an air of exclusivity to an otherwise fabulous project. I've been walking the beach at night for the past 3 years and have seen very few problems, and certainly none that this fence is going to solve…   more ›

Shorewood Going to Plan B on Atwater Beach Security Fence

Village officials now looking at installing a fence on a staircase near the top of the bluff, with hopes of shielding private beaches from late-night trespassers.

North Lake Drive residents pleading for village officials to re-erect security fencing near Atwater Beach may have to settle for Shorewood's "Plan B" to deterring trespassers onto their privately-owned beaches. Fences running along the north and south edge of Atwater Beach were taken down in 2009 after the village’s Parks Commission, citing a citizen group's concern that the ugly chain-linked fence ruined the beach and falling apart, approved their removal. Soon after, Lake Drive residents started complaining of an increase in crime, and that trespassers became a daily occurrence on their private property. Other problems reported included underage drinking, drug use, littering, people leaving behind broken glass and syringes, theft, …

If private property owners want fences --- they should put up their own on along their lots, as permitted by law. I have my own fences at my house that I have to maintain with my own funds -- I certainly don't want to pay for million$ plus property owners who want tax money for their private property needs. Why is the beach closed at 10PM --- government again taking an easy way out and using a …   more ›

Village Takes Next Step toward Re-Erecting Atwater Security Fencing

Trustee Thad Nation says village is asking for lawsuit by planning to connect a new fence to an existing fence on an adjacent jetty.

After more than an hour of heated discussion and some angry screaming from Lake Drive residents Monday, the Village Board voted 5-1 to re-erect security fencing at Atwater Beach. "This is ridiculous, come and spend a Friday or Saturday night down there and watch what goes on down there," one Lake Drive resident said. "The village acts like they don't care about its residents. We have been talking about this for two years." Monday, residents echoed previous concerns about crime spilling onto their property after the fence was removed. The fence had lined the north and south end of Atwater Beach, deterring trespassing onto privately-owned beaches via Atwater. While the crime has waned since the beach was closed for renovations months ago, …

Yes, voting 'no' was the right thing to do. Can I please ask though, why don't the homeowners put up their own fence. Why do I have to pay for this? If you want to protect 'your private property' then why shouldn't you have to pay for it. Does this mean that if I have issues with trespassers, vagrants, etc. that the city will be responsible for erecting a fence? The only thing I can think of is …   more ›

Village Board to Consider Re-Erecting Atwater Beach Security Fence

Two years after the village removed fencing, it will consider replacing it after Lake Drive residents complained of trespassers onto their private beaches.

The Shorewood Village Board will consider whether to approve re-erecting a security fence along either side of Atwater Beach, to stop trespassers from entering privately-owned beaches, at its next meeting Monday, 7:30 p.m. at Village Hall, 3930 N. Murray Ave. After Shorewood's Park Commission approved removing the fence in 2009, citing a special interest group's concern that the ugly chain-linked fence ruined the beach, Lake Drive residents started complaining of trespassers. Residents said underage drinking, drug use, littering, broken glass and syringes, theft, unattended fires and vandalism were spilling onto their private land after the fence, deterring beach-goers from venturing pass the boundaries of Atwater Beach and onto private …
