The tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut stole 26 lives and again opened the door on conversations about gun control and mental health. But another topic that has emerged is security in schools, and whether we are doing enough to keep children safe. Following the shooting, the National Rifle Association advocated arming teachers and stationing armed guards in schools. Patch surveyed Milwaukee area school districts on their schools' security practices. Parents share their thoughts and school officials discuss security and safety within the Shorewood district after an unfathomable tragedy in Connecticut.
"The major purpose of my existence is protecting children; I don’t understand how someone can be on the other end of that spectrum," Atwater Elementary School Principal Tim Kenney said. Struggling to find the words to put perspective on Friday's grisly shooting that killed 20 children and 7 adults in Newtown, CT, Kenney said he has experienced the gamut of emotions. Local and state police in Newtown, CT, were called to an elementary schoo this morning after a gunman opened fire at the school.
Twenty seven people are dead, including 18 children, at a Connecticut elementary school after a 20-year-old man went on a shooting rampage. The shooting happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, a town of about 28,000 people an hour outside of Stamford. Newtown Police were called to the school at about 9:30 a.m. Eastern time after receiving a 911 call. They alerted Connecticut State Police and authorities began an active shooter investigation once they arrived at the school, according to Connecticut State Police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance. Working toward a degree gets you in to be a teacher... that does not sound right. If you like that salary you can send your kid off to teach, not me. Not at tuition of 10k at least a year for 4 or 5 years. I suppose we could cut teacher pay to 20k and cops to 30k and then hire psychologists at 25k.
