The Sale Might Be Over For Internet Shoppers If Federal Bill Passes

Attention online shoppers: You might have to pony up more cash for those online shopping sprees, if federal sales tax legislation becomes law.

Online shoppers, who enjoyed avoiding paying sales tax for their out-of-state purchases, probably won't be happy if a bill pending in Congress becomes law. The Marketplace Fairness Act, which passed 69-27 in the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, allows states the authority, and option, of collecting taxes on Internet and catalog sales. The act does not create a new tax. But it does allow states the option of collecting the taxes, which they are already owed. However, the legislation does exempt small businesses that make less than $1 million from collecting the tax. U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) voted for the bill, but Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) did not. “Today, I joined a bipartisan majority of the U.S. Senate in support of the Marketplace Fairness …

Sen. Ron Johnson Open to Path to Citizenship for Undocumented Immigrants

But border security should be the priority, the Republican senator and Tea Party favorite said during an interview with Patch, adding immigration reform should be tackled in bite-sized pieces, not on a comprehensive basis.

U.S. Ron Johnson says he is open to the idea of a pathway to citizenship, or some sort of legal status system, so the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the country "can come out of the shadows." However, the Tea Party-backed Republican said Thursday that Congress should tackle immigration reform on a piecemeal basis — instead of passing a comprehensive plan. The debate over immigration reform has heated up in recent days, with protests staged Wednesday in cities across the country, including Milwaukee, as part of May Day celebrations. The demonstrations served as a message aimed at Congress, showing there's support for a path to citizenship, according to the New York Times.  In an interview with Patch on Thursday in Bayside, Johnson …

Yes, it's a touchy subject. Mexico is part of NAFTA, an economic endeavor... More or less, though, is that Berlin was always part of Germany, separated by Hitler's version of communism. If you remember, Mexico is a separate country, even if they are an ally. They're not a part of the USA... Situation is very different.   more ›

Hillary Clinton Spars with Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson Over Benghazi

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gets angry with Republican senator's questioning over the attack in Benghazi on Sept. 11.

In a heated exchange on Capitol Hill Wednesday, Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson took issue with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s explanation of how she handled the attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi. Clinton told members of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee that she accepted responsibility for not being aware of the warnings that the Benghazi facility wouldn’t be able to resist “a sustained assault,” but Johnson said the American people were misled as about the reasons for the attack in which four people were killed, according to a story by NBC News. In her opening statement, Clinton told the committee: “As I have said many times since September 11, I take responsibility. Nobody is more committed to getting this right. I am …

Wisconsin Lawmakers Not Thrilled with Bill That Averted Fiscal Cliff

None of the U.S. elected officials from Wisconsin particularly cared for the deal hammered out to avoid the "fiscal cliff" — and that includes those who voted for it.

The "fiscal cliff" was averted Tuesday when the U.S. House handily passed a bill approved a day earlier in the U.S. Senate that raised taxes on the wealthy and staved off a tax increase for the middle-class. The bill passed 257-167 in the House, a comfortable 40 votes more than what was needed to become law. Among the congressmen serving southeastern Wisconsin, U.S. Reps. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI 5th District) and Tom Petri (R-WI 6th District) voted "no" on the measure, while U.S. Reps. Paul Ryan (R- WI 1st District) and Gwen Moore (D- WI 4th District) cast "yes" votes. U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy (R-WI 7th District), who now serves the Hudson area, voted no. The U.S. Senate passed the bill 89-8 on Monday with Republican Ron Johnson and Democrat …

Patriot's post was unclear when he spoke about the large percentage who don't pay a single dime in federal income tax and then went on to speak about people on the dole although they could work. He failed to acknowledge the group of working people who because of low income and the use of tax deductions, exemptions and credit end up owing no federal income tax yet are taking no government aid. …   more ›

Party leaders and delegates offer up some advice for U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan on what will be the biggest speech of his life.

Paul Ryan on Wednesday night as the Wisconsin congressman formally accepts his vice presidential nomination in a prime-time speech at the Republican National Convention here. Patch chatted with Wisconsin delegates and other party leaders in Tampa about Ryan's acceptance speech and asked them what they thought he needs to do to introduce himself to America. __________________________________ Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch: "Paul Ryan just needs to go and be himself. Paul Ryan is loved in Wisconsin. Ron Johnson, Paul Ryan Team Up for April Fool's Prank on Romney

Wisconsin senator endorses GOP frontrunner Sunday morning, but he also teamed up with Congressman Ryan to play a joke on the former Massachusetts governor.

It's not a good sign when you're the leading candidate in the Republican presidential primary race and not a single person shows up to one of your campaign appearances. Luckily for Mitt Romney, Sunday was April Fools Day, and U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan and Sen. Ron Johnson were just having a little fun with him when they introduced him to an empty room at a campaign appearance in Wauwatosa on Sunday afternoon. While a packed dining hall of supporters waited upstairs at the Bluemound Gardens Restaurant, the two Wisconsin Republicans had prepared a nearly identical room decorated with campaign signs in a completely vacant downstairs room. "We didn't get much of a crowd this morning," they told Romney. "It will be OK, it will be OK." Romney joked …

Santorum Signs On to Event That Puts National Group's Focus on Wisconsin

But 'Defending the American Dream Summit' this weekend is about mobilizing the troops and educating citizens as Wisconsin's election season gets under way, organizers say.

A key national conservative organization will point a bright spotlight on southeastern Wisconsin Saturday in a daylong event boasting a potent lineup of Republican politicians, pundits and at least one presidential candidate. Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, along with U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson and U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, lead the speaking lineup for the "Defending the American Dream Summit" in Milwaukee. Fox News contributor and columnist Michelle Malkin, and radio host and political commentator Tony Katz also will appear in the event at the Wyndham Hotel, 4747 S. Howell Ave., hosted by the Americans for Prosperity Foundation – Wisconsin. Santorum's presence here just a week-and-a half before Wisconsin's presidential …
