Baby Formula a Hot Retail Theft Item

Shoplifters all around Milwaukee - and the country - are pushing the limits to get their hands on expensive canisters that are often being resold by other business owners.

Thefts of baby formula have been occurring, well, as long as baby formula has been sold in stores. But a rash of recent thefts in the Milwaukee area and even across the country, appear to have escalated in terms of the boldness and brazenness — or maybe desperation — of the offenders. The most recent large-scale bust happened in April when police say Ebony Sims, 26, and Johnetta Webb, 23, both from Milwaukee, loaded 69 cans of formula into plastic totes they had grabbed off the shelves at Walmart in Greenfield and waltzed out of the store. Two days later, the same couple tried again, this time planning a “push out” of about 60 cans before ditching the cans when alerted by an accomplice that police were outside waiting for them. “I think …

Police Nab Locals for 2nd Drunken Driving Offenses

After being pulled over for speeding, two local men were arrested by Shorewood police for their second operating while intoxicated incidents.

A 31-year-old Shorewood man pulled over for driving 22 MPH over the speed limit Friday morning was later arrested for his second drunken driving offense. Police pulled him over in the 1100 block of East Capitol Drive just before 2 a.m. He failed field sobriety tests and registered a 0.19 blood alcohol content, according to police.  He was also cited for speeding and operating after revocation. On Saturday night, a 30-year-old Whitefish Bay man was arrested for second offense drunken driving after being pulled over for driving 16 MPH over the posted speed limit. When police pulled him over in the 1100 block of East Capitol Drive at 11:40 p.m., a sobriety test was conducted, which the man failed. The driver registered a 0.14 blood alcohol …

Police Report: More than $1,000 Goes Missing from Gas Station Safe

A roundup of the latest from the Shorewood police log.

Shorewood BP is out $1,134 after the cash went missing from the gas station's safe. Police say store employee’s realized the money wasn’t in the safe Friday morning upon an armored truck arriving to pick it up. Clerks closing the station at 1513 E. Capitol Dr. on Thursday night were to place that day's money into the safe. Police are investigating the incident.  In other police news:

37 Bottles of Stolen Liquor Were to be Sold for Bail Money, Oshkosh Couple Told Police

The stockpile of stolen liquor was discovered in the suspects' car, after the two attempted to leave Pick 'n Save without paying for more alcohol, police say.

Two Oshkosh people were arrested over the weekend with 37 bottles of stolen liquor stashed in their car, which they told Shorewood police they planned to sell for bail money for a jailed friend. According to a police report, the suspects, a 40-year-old man and 37-year-old woman, were caught trying to leave Pick ‘n Save, 4145 N. Oakland Ave., on Saturday with several more bottles of alcohol valued at $296. The two admitted to stealing all of the liquor from different Pick ‘n Save stores on their way down from Oshkosh to the Milwaukee area, police say.  The two were cited for retail theft.

Citgo Owner Punches 2 Men Trying to Steal Cigarettes

The gas station owner told police one man tried to take a carton of cigarettes from a storage room while the other man distracted him by checking out.

The owner of Shorewood’s Citgo didn’t fall for a ruse two men tried to pull on him in order to bilk his gas station out of a carton of cigarettes on Friday. The owner of the gas station located at 1602 E. Capitol Dr. told police one man tried to take a carton of cigarettes from a storage room while the other man distracted him by checking out. He confronted the man attempting to take the cigarettes, a scuffle ensued and he ended up punching both men in the face on their way out of the store, he told police. The suspects left empty-handed.

Police Report: Milwaukee Man Admits to Hit-and-Run, during Drunken Driving Traffic Stop

A roundup of the latest from the Shorewood police reports.

Shorewood police arrested an 18-year-old Milwaukee man for drunken driving early Saturday morning after he was spotted driving erratically on North Oakland Avenue and later admitted to a hit-and-run in Milwaukee. Police say the man was spotted driving on East Capitol Drive around midnight when his car started to have some mechanical problems and began to swerve from side to side. The man was pulled over in the 1100 block of East Capitol Drive where police noticed he had damage to the front-end of his car and appeared intoxicated. He admitted to striking a parked van in Milwaukee and leaving the scene. The man failed a field sobriety test and a breath test later revealed he had a .17 blood alcohol level. In other police news:

Man Charged in $200 Meat and Detergent Theft

Milwaukee man tries to steal items from the Shorewood Pick 'n Save, but is caught walking down North Oakland Avenue with a shopping cart of stolen goods.

A 54-year-old Milwaukee man is facing charges after he was caught trying to steal $200 in meat and laundry detergent from a Shorewood grocery store. William Douglas Stokes was charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court Saturday with one count of retail theft. If convicted, he faces up to nine months in prison and $10,000 in fines. According to the criminal complaint: On Friday, a cashier at Pick ‘n Save spotted Stokes walk into the store, then grab a shopping cart and disappear into the store for five minutes before coming back with numerous packages of meat, seafood and laundry detergent. He then walked out the store without paying for the cart full of goods, so store employees called police. Stokes was found by officers pushing the cart …

Police Report: Woman Stocks Up Cart with $103 in Items, Fools Cashier with Old Receipt On Way Out

Also in the report, a contractor working in the area reports $570 worth of tools stolen from his truck.

Police say an unknown woman loaded up a shopping cart with $103 worth of merchandise and showed the cashier an old receipt on her way out of Walgreens, 4081 N. Oakland Ave., on Monday. The stolen items included body wash, toilet paper and laundry detergent. No arrests have been made. Also in the report, a contractor working in Shorewood on Tuesday said two sawzalls, a drill and several drill bits were taken from his truck sometime between 11:30 a.m. and 3:27 p.m. The items are worth $570 and the victim told police he’s unsure where the theft occurred, because he worked at several different locations during the day.

Police Report: Milwaukee Man Arrested for Shoplifting $61 Worth of Axe Body Wash

A 34-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested for drunken driving Tuesday after police pulled him over for driving with suspended license plates. Police stopped the man in the 6100 block of East Olive Street at about 11:47 p.m. and say he smelled of alcohol. He failed a field sobriety test and had a .13 blood alcohol level. It’s his first operating while intoxicated offense. On Sunday, a 23-year-old Milwaukee man was pulled over for speeding and failing to move over for a stopped emergency vehicle and later arrested for drunken driving. Police say he was stopped near the intersection of East Capitol Drive and North Fratney Street in Milwaukee around midnight, where he failed a field sobriety test and later found to have a .20 blood alcohol …

Police Report: Local Authorities Make Drunken Driving and Pot Possession Arrests

A roundup of the latest from the Shorewood police reports.

Police arrested a 29-year-old Milwaukee woman March 7 after they say she was driving drunk and found in possession of marijuana. She was stopped in the 1500 block of East Capitol Drive at about 2 a.m. after police discovered her registration was suspended. During the traffic stop, police say the woman slurred her speech, smelled like intoxicants and had glassy, bloodshot eyes. She failed a field sobriety test and refused to submit to a Breathalyzer test. Police later found .7 grams of pot in the woman’s possession. It’s the woman’s first drunken driving offense.
