The "Occupy Wall Street" movement defined by protests against the financial elite throughout the country is coming to Milwaukee on Saturday, and Patch is looking to connect with local people who plan to attend. Occupy Milwaukee is Saturday, with an 11 a.m. rally at Zeidler Park and a 12:30 p.m. protest at the Chase Bank building on Wisconsin Avenue. The group has a Facebook page and Twitter account, and WISN reports the group is already meeting with police to avoid some of the problems that have taken place elsewhere. More than 100 people were arrested in Boston, reports the Washington Post, and about 700 were arrested earlier this month in New York, says the Daily News. Protesters take issue with senator's support of Ryan's Medicare overhaul, but Darling spokesman says it's a federal issue, not a state one.
Dozens of people gathered Thursday to protest Sen. Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) outside her campaign office on Silver Spring Drive in Glendale. The event was organized to protest Darling's support of U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan's budget plan, which calls for an overhaul of Medicare. She expressed her support for Ryan's plan at a GOP fundraiser in June. As protesters marched in a circle up and down Silver Spring Drive, they chanted: "Darling, Darling, she don't care! She wants to end Medicare!" However, Darling's campaign manager, Andrew Davis, said the protesters are interjecting a federal issue into what is a state campaign. Sen. Alberta Darling says she supports extending unemployment benefits for another 13 weeks.
In what has become a reoccurring scene throughout state Sen. Alberta Darling’s district, protesters once again gathered in front of her office Tuesday - this time in Menomonee Falls. In a protest sponsored by Wisconsin Jobs Now, a group of about 50 to 60 people demanded both the Republican senator and Gov. Scott Walker call a special session to secure additional unemployment benefits in Wisconsin. More than 10,000 unemployed Wisconsin residents saw their extended benefits run out April 16, according to the Journal Sentinel. The Legislature chose not to accept $89 million in federal funding that would have extended these benefits to the out-of-work for another 13 weeks, from 73 weeks to 86 weeks. Labor and advocacy groups meet early in effort to get word out to those working during hearing process.
The public's input on Gov. Scott Walker's proposed biennial budget continued Monday as the Legislature's Joint Finance Committee came to Milwaukee for an eight-hour listening session at State Fair Park. The hearing was scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., but opponents of the budget, upset that the session is being held during working hours, were doing their best to extend the time frame from dawn to dusk. Scheduling their own press conference for 7 a.m. outside the Expo Center, where the hearing is taking place, Citizen Action of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin AFL-CIO and other groups sought to get a jump on the powerful finance committee. More than 100 people voice their support of a recall of Sen. Alberta Darling Wednesday.
The office of State Sen. Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) on Wednesday became the target of a large demonstration for the second time in as many months. More than 100 demonstrators wielding megaphones, signs, drums and their voices formed a line along the sidewalk in front of her office at N88W16621 Appleton Ave. Recall petitioners were also present in the crowd, and were gathering signatures. Some motrists pulled over and signed a petition from their car. Petitioners will need to gather more than 20,000 signatures before May 2 to force a recall election. Alternate entrance to Capitol is heavily guarded.
State Rep. Dan Knodl was sent to the Risser Building across the street from the State Capitol, in order to enter the Capitol through an underground tunnel. When he arrived at that entrace, this video captured police in riot gear standing guard. Patch's Jim Price reports that demonstrators are being forcibly removed from the Capitol.

Protesters from all over the Milwaukee area converged on downtown Menomonee Falls Wednesday afternoon to protest Gov. Scott Walker’s proposed budget repair bill. Hundreds of public workers and residents assembled at about 4 p.m. in the parking lot outside North Middle School on Garfield Avenue before marching down Appleton Avenue. Protesters chanted: “Kill the bill!” and “Hey, hey, ho, ho, Scott Walker’s got to go!” while motorists beeped their horns and waved in approval.
