Just went to Joey B's in Mequon. On a scale of 5 - Atmosphere 2, Service 4, Prime Rib 1 no flavor & cold (this was the Saturday special), the water tasted as if they pumped it directly from the river out back.. We did find a parking spot close to the front door.   more ›

My kids love to go to the pub to watch the 'football' games. We will be there often now that the Premier League has started up again. The 'Irish Nachos' have become a family favorite. Thanks and please keep up the good work, David.   more ›

Street Festival Added to Thursday's Shorewood Bike Race

The owners of Three Lions Pub are teaming up with other Oakland Avenue businesses to throw a block party, offering live music and drinks on the street.

In addition to pro cyclists entertaining the masses in Shorewood in Thursday's Shorewood Criterium, race-goers can take in live music, drinks and food in the village with a few local taverns and restaurants partnering to launch a street festival in Kensington Square. Three Lions Pub owners David Price and Christopher Tinker, who organized the festival, said they want it to have a family-friendly atmosphere and hopefully blossom into a Shorewood tradition. Village officials unanimously approved the street festival Monday night. On Thursday, the 4500 block of Oakland Avenue will be barricaded at 4 p.m. and organizers hope to have the stage and outside drink tables ready by 4:30 p.m. The festival will wrap up by 9:30 p.m. Three Lions is …

Business Booms for Bistro Bosses

Shorewood's North Star American Bistro part of owners' success story.

Mike Stoner, co-owner of North Star American Bistro, calls his restaurant “upscale, casual.” It’s an accurate portrayal, but hardly begins to describe all that the sleek, spacious eatery, 4518 N. Oakland Ave., has to offer. The 4,300-square-foot bistro serves everything from cheeseburgers and pizza to crab cakes and steak au poivre. Wine, beer and spirit offerings are extensive. Three distinct dining rooms each own a unique vibe, including one designed to accommodate diners with young, potentially rambunctious children. Where most of the restaurant’s walls are covered with artwork and photography, the family room hosts a chalkboard and collection of children’s toys. “I want to appeal to a broad base, but remain specific in concept,” Stoner…

I liked going to the restaurant when it was across the street from its present location. Lately, I have been denied admission because I did not have a dinner reservation. When I pointed out that there were plenty of empty tables, the hostess apologized for the policy, but turned me away. I can walk (a few extra blocks) to the Oakcrest.   more ›

Bites Nearby: A Little Chic in Shorewood

North Star American Bistro adds some pizzazz to the North Shore.

Milwaukee has its downtown scene, but sometimes you just want a good, classy meal without driving in circles looking for parking. The North Star American Bistro relocated to a bigger and better building just across the street on Oakland Avenue, and caters to those finer dining cravings without the burden and bustle of downtown. As I walked in, my eyes immediately went up. The restaurant has 20-foot high ceilings with large, modern paintings and photographs throughout giving it a very retro look. Deep, maroon walls accented with stony gray brick pillars make it feel inviting and nothing short of timeless. North Star is divided into to parts. Just inside the front door is the hostess and a massive bar with high-top tables. We were greeted by…

I'm really sorry to hear others are experiencing what we did as well. I was hoping we just hit a couple of off nights. This was one of our favorite places to go when they were were in the old location across the street. Food was consistently good, wait staff was professional and attentive. I assume it's the same ownership/management, but maybe not. It just seems like such a drastic change in …   more ›
