Hummingbird Art Boutique Shifting to New Ownership, Name

With business breaking even for owners Leslie Phillips and Spencer, they will move over and make way for The Waxwing.

A year after opening their handmade art boutique on North Oakland Avenue, co-owner Leslie Phillips says she'll be turning the shop over to new ownership on March 1. Phillips said she and co-owner Leslie Spencer weren't able to gain any momentum with Hummingbird Art Boutique, never turning a profit with the store. They saw a big push initially, but business slowing died down. Phillips wants to be able to focus more on her art rather than running the store. "We weren't losing money, but we didn't once cut ourselves a check," she said. "We were basically able to maintain the shop. "I want to be able to travel and sell my art, rather than sit around the shop for $0 an hour." The store will close on Feb. 28, allowing Phillips and Spencer to …

Nutrition, Natural Foods Focus of New Shorewood Pet Outpost

Dog lovers open new shop on North Wilson Drive specializing in healthy options — and raw food — for your pet's diet.

Sherri and Erik Losby became passionate about pet nutrition after their eyes were opened to the healthy options available to their two pug dogs, Gus and Bobby.  "We are so eager to share what we have learned," they said. "We opened The Pet Outpost...to encourage others to learn about what their pets really need as far as a raw diet and nutrition, and provide that for them." The Losbys chose Shorewood for their new store at 4604 N. Wilson Dr. because it is so pet-friendly, and also because they are planning to relocate their home here as well in the next few years. "The location was perfect," Sherri said, "with ample free parking, a great neighbor (Rainbow Jersey), and a dog park close by, making it convenient for people to stop in with …

Dispatches: The Changing American Dream

After Home Away from Home is Extinguished, Two British Friends Open Three Lions

Following fire at British-style tavern, the former pub's two managers and longtime friends realized their local slice of home in Three Lions Pub.

The English pub is homogeneous to a community hub, providing a venue for locals to come and expound on culture, David Price says. It's much more than just a place to grab a "pint and a bite." “It's a place to go watch soccer, a cozy little pub like back home, where you can come on your own and read a book or come with 20 people and have a party,” Price said. Price and longtime friend Christopher Tinker both grew up in small towns situated between Manchester and Liverpool in the United Kingdom, where they came to digest the paramountcy of the local pub to the English communities they serve. They made the journey to Milwaukee in early 2003, on scholarships to play soccer and study at Cardinal Stritch University, in a group of five. It was in…

Village Board Approves Minor Changes To Developer's Agreement

Revisions will reduce federal tax burden for developer.

The Village Board unanimously approved Monday changes to the developer's agreement with Mandel Group, a developer that plans to build a $34 million mixed-use development in Shorewood. The revisions reflect the Mandel Group creating the Kenmore Place 4041 Corp. to receive grant funds from the village and, as a result, avoiding a federal tax liability, according to Bruce Block, special counsel to the village. The revision stems from an Internal Revenue Service requirement that grants recieved by a limited liability company are treated as taxable income, he told the CDA. By creating the corporation, the Mandel Group avoids a 35 to 40 percent tax liability on the $5 million in developer grant funds from the village's Tax Increment District No…

Mandel Has Enough Money to Repay $3.5 Million Loan From Village, If Needed

Financial adviser confident Barry Mandel can meet annual shortfall payments on debt service.

Barry Mandel, the developer who plans to build a $34 million mixed-use development in the Shorewood, is capable of meeting any annual shortfall payments on the project's annual loan payments if needed, according to a consultant hired by the village.  Michael Harrigan, the village's financial adviser with Ehlers and Associates, told the Community Development Authority Wednesday that he has reviewed Mandel's personal financial statements and is confident that he is able to meet the financial obligation, if needed during the life of the project.  The village is lending Mandel $3.54 million for the project. The loan is expected to be paid back with revenue generated through rent.  CDA members asked Harrigan how common this type of due …

Shorewood Verizon Store Closes after Almost Five Years

Verizon store owner says he appreciates all the community support but it's time to pursue other ventures.

Dan Rosenbaum, owner of the Verizon store in Shorewood, announced Tuesday he closed the doors for good on his shop on North Oakland Avenue. The store had been open for almost five years in the village, including as a Sprint store. "My family and I appreciate all the community support from the customers that have shopped locally and kept us in business for almost five years," he said in his announcement on Patch. Rosenbaum said he will be pursuing other ventures, and the building at 4144 N. Oakland Ave. is now open for leasing. Rosenbaum's business gained attention from the village in May when officials asked Rosenbaum to remove the advertisements from the side of his building because they violated code. He appealed the decision but …

Dan's business offered great service and was an asset to the community. He cleaned up a nearly decrepit property and was an honest businessman. In response the Village hassled and hounded him. Do they think a vacant property with 'For Lease' banners is better for the community than a going concern with reasonable signage?   more ›

Sumptuous Sushi in Shorewood

With its extensive menu, NaNa Asian Fusion serves up fresh food for any budget, and covers some serious geography in its cuisine.

I will admit, prior to actually going into NaNa Asian Fusion, I was a little apprehensive that this new place would feel cold and be too expensive for us to go as a couple for a real meal, let alone take the kids. But my visit there Monday night with my daughter proved to be delightful. I felt lucky to be eating there, from the comfortable and upscale bar to the textured booths with excellent lighting and dark wood tables. Feels like they know what they are doing with space and lighting, and it really felt like a special occasion, though it didn't break the bank. The booths are low, so you can see the people behind you rather well, but for me that was good because my restaurant neighbors ordered a Shirley Temple ($2) for their daughter and…

Their sushi is great but they still do not have control over their kitchen. Waited 30 minutes after my son got his Sushi dinner for our meal from the kitchen. This is the second time we have been there to have long waits from the kitchen food. We won't be back. Three hours for dinner is too long.   more ›

Sushi Restaurant, NaNa Asian Fusion, Opens Its Doors Wednesday

Owner Nick Zheng says they won't be 100 percent operational, but ready to serve up some sushi when doors open at 11 a.m. sharp.

New sushi restaurant and bar, NaNa Asian Fusion, will join the ever-growing and revitalized Shorewood business district, when it open its doors Wednesday morning. Owner Nick Zheng says Wednesday will be sort a pre-opening, meaning the bar won’t be open and a few items on the menu won't be available. They'll open at 4511 N. Oakland Ave, down the street from Three Lions Pub and Village Pub and Grill and across from Cornerstone. "The bars isn't going to be open yet; the sushi bar will be open," he said. "And I'll say we'll have 90 percent of food on the menu ready." He added his wait staff is still learning the ins and outs of the restaurant too, with training starting Wednesday. Everything should be fully up and running by next week, Zheng …

Instead of Leaving Shorewood, SunSeekers Expanding to Milwaukee's East Side

Construction has already started on a new shop off of East Prospect Avenue; tanning salon owner plans renovations to Shorewood location.

With his lease up, Shorewood tanning salon owner Ryan Nesbitt said he planned to move his shop SunSeekers by Rosie out of the village, but after finally settling on a deal, he’ll stay and instead expand to Milwaukee’s east side. Construction has already began on a new storefront next to American Apparel near East Prospect Avenue and East Kenilworth Place, which will mark SunSeekers' 13th location in the state. Nesbitt said he hopes to tap into the college student population in the area, with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee recently expanding to the neighborhood. “In my eyes, I always thought it was kind of like a broken-down area on the east side,” Nesbitt said. “Now they have new buildings, the campus is expanded out there, there’s …
