CYGA Finds Success in a Good Combination

Catering to cyclists and yogis, CYGA offers a unique take on fitness, with cycling and yoga offering balance to clients.

In the four years since opening its doors, CYGA, Cycling and Yoga, and its creators, Margie Freeman and Julie Prochnow, have sought to offer Shorewood a more "unique" look at fitness.   “CYGA is more of a boutique type fitness facility,” said Freeman, who discovered the concept while living out West. “We turn yogis into cyclists and cyclists into yogis!”  CYGA, Cycling and Yoga opened its Shorewood location at 3575 N Oakland Ave, in September of 2009. Freeman, partner turned owner when Prochnow retired last September, grew up in nearby Cedarburg. She was first turned onto cycling while attending college at San Jose State University in California.  “During the time I spent in San Jose and in the San Francisco Bay area, I really got into the…

New Building Means Positive Things For Shorewood

Visitors and residents alike have positive thoughts on construction throughout the Village of Shorewood. Not only is it a sign of new business but a sign of a healthy economy.

Signs lined the streets of North Bartlett Avenue and East Kenmore place, outlining North Shore Presbyterian Church’s urban location Tuesday morning. “Absolutely No Construction Vehicle Parking Allowed At Any Time,” the signs threatened, warning violators of the $500 fine which may await them.  Since its launch in March of 2012, the Church and Learning Center has neighbored the construction of a Mandel Group project: the Lighthorse 4041, a six-story apartment and retail development.  “I appreciate what it will do for Shorewood,” said Amanda Singh, who frequents North Shore Presbyterian. “Construction is good to see, it is a sign of a good economy.”  Local moms, Singh and Sara Abbass, have taken their children to Connie’s Sunshine Learning …

Frozen Yogurt Trend Comes to Shorewood

Shorewood will be joining the frozen yogurt craze come March when Yo Mama! yogurt opens in the new Ravenna development.

Milwaukee and its suburbs have a long history of rich custard desserts. From Kopps to Culvers, the city enjoys its custard. But, there's new treat in town as of late — frozen yogurt. Whitefish Bay has two frozen yogurt restaurants, Cherry Berry and Sweet Frog. Other frozen yogurt chains in the Milwaukee area include Froyo Bella at Bayshore, Red Mango in Fox Point, Berry Me on Brady Street, Orange Leaf in Wauwatosa and Waukesha, MyYoMy in Walker's Point and Yo Factory on Farwell. And, starting in March, Shorewood will get its time in the “froyo” spotlight when Yo Mama! opens up its new store at 4521 N. Oakland Ave., in the new Ravenna development. “The demographic that Yo Mama! tends to serve is the families and walking communities,” said …

Finally Rebuilding After Fire, Owner Hopes for a New Restaurant in Brit Inn's Wake

After many delays, construction could be done in three months on former Brit Inn.

On May 26, 2009, Byung Kuk Yun awoke to a telephone call from a detective informing him that the building he owned on N. Oakland Ave. was on fire. The Brit Inn, occupying the south half of the buildings at 4473-79 N. Oakland Ave., burned to the ground in a fire later rule arson. Yun’s martial arts studio BK Yun's Black Belt Academy and the tenant to the north were spared. More than two years later, construction workers are finally demolishing dilapidated features and erecting new walls on what Yun hopes will become a restaurant and turn around what has been an exhausting financial drain. “It was really hard times, the most hard in my life,” Yun said. “I always think, what kind of crazy guys do this? After the fire, I was feeling really bad…

New Salon Owner in Shorewood Confident in Unique Presence

Lynn Moritz brings a following of high-end clients to Shorewood with her new shop St. Moritz.

The worst was when her client’s grandchild threw up in the car and Lynn Moritz had to carry the baby into the salon before styling her client’s hair. But she didn’t hesitate; it’s all part of the job she loves as a high-end hair stylist. “They feel like you’re a friend. You’re not just a hairdresser,” Moritz said. “It feels good to be able to help and feel a bond with people.” After working for many years as an independent stylist at salons in the Milwaukee area, Moritz opened her own salon in January called St. Moritz Salon at 3955 N. Prospect Ave. in Shorewood. Two weeks ago, she and her husband Scott St. Peter bought the building, which includes six apartment units now called the St. Moritz apartments. Moritz said her salon draws …
