State Lawmakers Start New Session in Legislature

State Rep. Sandy Pasch and Sen. Lena Taylor take the oath of office as the Wisconsin Legislature starts a new two-year session.

The Wisconsin Legislature started its new two-year session Monday with the swearing in of lawmakers — among them Democrats Rep. Sandy Pasch and Sen. Lena Taylor. In the new session, Pasch of Shorewood will serve as the assistant minority leader in the state Assembly after being chosen by her colleagues. On the Senate side, Taylor, who won re-election to the 4th Senate District in fall elections, told constituents on Facebook, "Today, Wisconsin inaugurates the 101st session of the Legislature and I am humbled and honored to continue serving the people of Milwaukee, Shorewood, Glendale, and Wauwatosa at the Capitol.” Pasch recently won election to the newly drawn 10th Assembly District, which includes Shorewood and portions of Milwaukee. “I …

Obama, Baldwin Carry Shorewood Vote

The village helped the president cruise to re-election and U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin win Wisconsin's open U.S. Senate seat. Meanwhile, State Sen. Lena Taylor and U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore retain their seats.

The Democratic presidential ticket of Barack Obama and Joe Biden took the Shorewood vote Tuesday garnering 71 percent. According to unofficial results from village clerk's office, Republicans Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan garnered 2,372 or 26 percent while Democrats Obama and Biden, who won re-election and took the state as well, received 6,295. The village once again leaned Democratic, as it voted 74 percent for Obama and Biden during the 2008 presidential election against Republicans John McCain and Sarah Palin. In a hotly contested race for the state's open U.S. Senate seat, Democratic candidate U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin grabbed 70 percent of the vote in the village with 6,041 ballots cast in her favor, whereas Republican candidate and former…

Shorewood Election Central 2012

What you'll need to know before you head to the polls and a look at the candidates for public office and issues that will affect Shorewood, Milwaukee County and Wisconsin.

COUNTY: STATE: FEDERAL: LIVE 2012 ELECTION RESULTS Presidential and U.S. Senate results only represent votes in Shorewood. Congressional and state legislative results are for entire district. LAST UPDATE: 10:42 p.m.   Obama-Biden   6:34 p.m. Tuesday: The small Democrat office across from St. Mary’s Hospital on Maryland Ave. near Shorewood held roughly 20 volunteers with three hours to go before the polls closed on Tuesday night. However, within 15 minutes of my arrival, only five volunteers remained after the office had cleared out. Where did they all go? “We’re in a total last minute effort to get to people at their houses, to encourage them to leave their houses and go to their polling places,” said Jim Gramling, a volunteer who has been…

Election Preview: Wisconsin 4th State Senate District

Incumbent state Sen. Lena Taylor is being challenged in the 4th State Senate District by independent candidate David King.

David King says Lena Taylor hasn't seen a real opponent since she was first elected to the state Senate nearly eight years ago. Democrat Taylor has in fact run unopposed in the last two general elections, but King, an independent, hopes to serve as that true challenge on Tuesday when the two face off in a race for the 4th State Senate District. Taylor, 46 of Milwaukee, was first elected to the state Assembly in 2003, and the 4th Senate District in 2005. She ran for Milwaukee County executive in 2008 and lost to now Gov. Scott Walker. She was recently appointed as co-chair of the Legislature's powerful Joint Committee on Finance — the first African-American woman ever to do so. For Taylor, "No question the No. 1 issue facing the district is…

GOP Lawmakers Asked to Keep Quiet while Writing New District Maps

According to documents released Monday, leaders asked Republican legislators to sign agreements promising they would not discuss new maps.

State Republican lawmakers were told to ignore public comments and instead concentrate on information from secret sessions as new legislative and congressional district maps were being drawn last summer. Nearly all Republican legislators signed legal agreements promising not to talk about the new maps while they were being written, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Documents detailing the legal agreements as well as a set of talking points given to GOP legislators were released Monday, after three federal judges called motions filed by Republicans who fought to keep the documents secret frivolous, according to the paper. Under the agreements, lawmakers agreed to "not to disclose the fact and/or contents of such discussions or …

I'm APPALLED at the GOP antics, lies, bait & switches etc.. By the way... what ever did in fact happen to Scott Walker? I'm truly worried about his mental health. I think he is having a breakdown and is continueing to suffer from dilusions. What does a state do when an impaired governor begins is . I am NOT ok with the secrecy. Without Shorewood, the North Shore will be politically imbalanced, …   more ›

Shoreline Schtick

Redistricting Proves Ironic for This Republican

Redistricting of the Shoreline has Sara seeing red and not in the way she would like.

Usually when I talk about my love of residing in Shorewood with my conservative friends, there's jabs and jokes, giggles and gaffs. Why on Earth would I, a staunch Republican, choose to move into one of the most densely liberal populated areas?  Quite to the contrary, was my smartypants answer. For the first time in my adult life I was hanging with my peeps. Sensenbrenner had my back in Washington and my girl Alberta was giving me high fives from Madison. Of course the irony of that picture doesn't escape me. And I'm not talking about that Alanis Morrisette fake ironic either. The sweet, sweet irony of being out numbered 10 to 1 in my chosen home base was that I had more conservative clout now than ever before.  Sadly, my genius plan …
