Balkovec Named Wisconsin Hockey Coach of the Year

The head coach of the WNS Storm hockey team received top state honors the day before the team's first state tournament game.

After coaching the WNS Storm co-op hockey team to its first-ever state tournament, Maco Balkovec was named coach of the year by the Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Association. Balkovec received the Bob Johnson Memorial Coach of the Year award at a state tournament banquet in Madison Wednesday night. On Thursday, the WNS Storm — a co-op hockey team made up of athletes from Whitefish Bay, Nicolet and Shorewood high schools — plays its first state tournament game against Eau Claire Memorial.  Balkovec has coached WNS Storm and taught at Whitefish Bay High School for four years. Storm Hockey Wins 6th Game in 7 Tries

The team entered the season with high hopes, and hasn't disappointed so far this year.

A strong third period helped the combined Whitefish Bay/Nicolet/Shorewood hockey team to a 5-2 win over Brookfield/Catholic Memorial Saturday, extending its win streak to four games. JSOnline.com reported that the Storm (6-1) were down 2-1 in the second period before tying it up, then scored three times in eight minutes in the third period. According to WisconsinPrepHockey.net, the Storm’s only loss was a 5-4 decision at Arrowhead, when the Warhawks scored four times in the third period. The Whitefish Bay/Shorewood/Nicolet co-op hockey team defeated Grafton/Port Washington 11-1 on Saturday night.

The Whitefish Bay/Shorewood/Nicolet co-op hockey team — known as the WNS Storm — had no problems handling the Grafton/Port Washington co-op on Saturday. While the 11 goals in the 11-1 victory didn't actually happen in 43 seconds, we've got them condensed into a highlight package here, thanks to the WNS video crew. The Storm is a veteran team with nine seniors, and has at least four representatives from each of its three member high schools.

Intensity Wanes as Hockey Team Loses

The WNS Storm co-op hockey team needs to tighten focus if it hopes to compete.

The WNS Storm co-op hockey team lost to Kettle Moraine 4-1 on Tuesday, and coach Maco Balkovec said a lack of intensity has reared its ugly head once again. Kettle Moraine scored first with a goal by Matt Becker at 12:13 of the first period. Jake Erdman followed with a goal of his own in the second period. George Schley of Whitefish Bay got the WNS goal in the second period, off assists by Nick Sullivan and Drew Kneisel. Kettle Moraine popped in two more goals in the third. “I thought we moved the puck well,” Balkovec said. “We had a lot of great chances but we weren’t crashing the net like we had recently.” Balkovec demands 100 percent from his kids all the time and said while it sounds like a broken record, it’s true.” “Sometimes they …
