UWM Students Seek Public Input in Shorewood Redevelopment Project

UWM urban planning graduate students are seeking the community's input, as part of a semester-long project looking at redevelopment of the west corridor of East Capitol Drive.

As part of a semester-long project, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Urban Planning graduate students will work on a redevelopment plan for the west corridor of Shorewood's East Capitol Drive. To field public input on the project, the students will host a public, open house on April 16, at 6:30 p.m. in Shorewood’s Village Center (lower level of Shorewood Library). The open house starts with a short presentation, followed by the review of various display stations showcasing key areas for discussion. Display stations will remain open until 7:30 p.m. The scope of the project includes the creation of a redevelopment plan that addresses land use, civic use, housing use, parking and transportation. "I think the board recognizes the importance of maintaining a balance between the business districts and the residential areas, and that decisions can't be made for the benefit of one," said Sue Witas, a North Frederick Avenue resident who largely organized a petition drive opposing the rezoning.  About 50 residents turned out Monday and more than a dozen spoke, most against the project, but some in support of a rezoning petition filed by Garden Room owner Deb Kern.  The petition would …
