A 53-year-old Milwaukee man allegedly breaks into a Shorewood apartment complex then tries to force his way into coin-operated laundry machines.
A 53-year-old Milwaukee man is facing charges after he allegedly broke into a Shorewood apartment complex and tried to pry his way into coin boxes in the building’s laundry room. Edward Andrew Hay was charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court Wednesday with one count of burglary. If convicted, he faces up to 12 ½ years in prison and $25,000 in fines. According to the criminal complaint: On July 18, a man was in the laundry room of an apartment complex in the 1700 block of East Newton Avenue when he spotted Hay wearing black gloves and walking out of the area. Police say the man broke into a boiler room, grabbed 13 sets of apartment keys, then entered two units while residents were home, grabbing a DVD player and laptop in the process.
A 39-year-old Glendale man is facing felony charges after he allegedly broke into apartments in the Shorewood complex where he used to be a building manager. Gary Kortsch was charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court Friday with one count of burglary, one count of criminal trespass to a dwelling and one count of criminal damage to property. If convicted, he faces up to 14 years in prison and $45,000 in fines. Overnight on Saturday, an apartment was burglarized around the same time the building's manager says a man grabbed 13 sets of keys and illegally entered at least one apartment.
Police say a unit in a Shorewood apartment building was burglarized sometime overnight on Saturday, with several pieces of electronics stolen. The victim told police the theft occurred sometime between 5 p.m. Saturday and 10:30 a.m. Sunday at her apartment in the 3900 block of North Maryland Avenue. A Dell laptop, DVD player and iPod were stolen. Within the same time period at the same apartment building, the building manager told police that a man entered the building, broke into the boiler room, grabbed 13 sets of apartment keys and illegally entered at least one unit. Local man is tracked back to burglaries after he leaves evidence at one house and on an earring sold to a jewelry shop.
A Shorewood man is facing charges for allegedly breaking into two homes and stealing money from a woman as she made a cash withdrawal from an ATM machine. Joel Benaderet, 21, was charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court Thursday with two counts of burglary and one count of theft from a person or corpse. If convicted, he faces up to 35 years in prison and $75,000 in fines. According to the criminal complaint: In December, Benaderet broke into two homes in the 3800 block of North Frederick Avenue and stole jewelry, a laptop computer and a bag containing 60 various gemstones. Police believe the home was illegally entered through an unlocked window. More than $500 worth of property and cash was taken.
A Shorewood home was burglarized and car stolen from the property Monday, while the homeowner was sleeping in the house, police say. Police believe entry was gained to the home by removing the screen of an unlocked kitchen window. A $200 iPhone, $313 in cash and a Pontiac GrandAm were taken from the residence in the 3500 block of North Murray Avenue. Police found the stolen Pontiac abandoned in an alleyway in the same block. A neighbor called police Monday saying they found the car parked in the alleyway, and thought it might have rolled out of a garage. Police later tracked the car to the home.

December marked the inception of Shorewood Patch and January was our first full month of serving the community. We thought we'd look back at the top stories of the year, month by month. Here’s a recap of the news that made headlines in January. Though we were still new, we kicked off the month with some great stories. Unknown actor(s) broke the rear window of a home in the 3800 block of North Frederick Avenue in a burglary Monday.
A laptop and several pieces of jewelry were stolen from a Shorewood home targeted in a burglary Monday, police say. Sometime between noon and 9:45 p.m., a home in the 3800 block of North Frederick Avenue was illegally entered by breaking out a rear window and a Dell laptop computer and four gold rings taken. The value of the items stolen is still unclear and police have no suspects.

Police share a homeowner's concern that unknown actor(s) have been routinely illegally entering his home in the 1700 block of East Newton Avenue, and stealing items. The resident told police they were away from their home for just short of a week and when they returned early Monday morning they noticed a pair of $500 ¼ ct. diamond earrings set in 18kt white gold were missing. The resident says he has had several items disappear from his home over the last few months including a jar of coins and $30 in cash. Police suspect the intruder is coming in through a bedroom window, which the homeowner says he just recently noticed has a broken lock. Also in the police report:

Police arrested a 14-year-old Shorewood boy Monday morning after he was caught in the act.
After a scuffle, a Shorewood homeowner was able to detain a local teenager attempting to burglarize his home Monday morning, police say. The homeowner in the 2400 block of East Stratford Court told police he heard his doorbell ring twice around 10:35 a.m., but he wasn’t expecting visitors, so he ignored the bell. A short time later, he heard the back door to his home open and footsteps in the kitchen. He entered the room to find the suspect rummaging through kitchen draws. He struggled with the boy, but was able to detain him and call 911. The 14-year-old Shorewood boy was taken into police custody and referred to the Milwaukee County Children’s Court Center.

The Milestones program is out $700 after the Shorewood daycare program’s main office inside St. Robert school was burglarized sometime over the weekend. Police say doors to the closed and locked school and program office at 2214 E. Capitol Dr. were entered but showed no signs of forced entry. However, a safe inside the office was forcibly entered.
