Greyhounds' State Tournament Hopes Stymied in Overtime Shootout

The Pewaukee Pirates out shot Shorewood in a penalty shootout round, following two scoreless overtime periods.

The Greyhounds' state tournament dreams were dashed by Pewaukee Saturday, after the two played to a draw and entered a penalty shootout round. The two met in the WIAA Division 2 boys soccer sectional finals in Whitewater. After two scoreless halves, the teams played two overtime periods in which neither was able to sneak a goal in. In a penalty shootout round, Pewaukee out shot the Greyhounds 4-2, to move on to the state tournament. "If we could have had five more minutes on the field, instead of a shootout, I think it would have been a different outcome," head coach Aron Gentry said. Greyhounds Advance to Sectional Finals after Topping Whitewater

Shorewood secured a spot in the WIAA sectional finals Thursday night, after dominating the Whippets Thursday night 5-1. They have a chance to reach state for the first time since 2004.

The rain came in sideways all night, but it didn't seem to bother the Greyhounds Thursday as they cruised to an easy victory over Whitewater and advanced to the sectional finals round of the Division 2 WIAA playoffs. After running into the Catholic Memorial last year in regionals, Shorewood is just one win away from its first state tournament berth since 2004. That year, the Greyhounds lost in the state championship game. Thursday night, Shorewood scored early and often. Its first goal came just inside the 4-minute mark, courtesy of midfielder Josh Landers. The Greyhounds ended the first half with three goals, shutting out the Whippets. Photo Gallery: Shorewood Boys Soccer Dominates Whitnall

Shorewood defeated Whitnall 5-0 Wednesday night.

Shorewood dominated Whitnall in a boys soccer match Wednesday, 5-0, improving the Greyhounds to 4-3-1 and dropping the Falcons to 3-4-1. All of the Greyhounds' goals came in the first half, when they dominated the Whitnall defense. Shorewood's next match is Monday, when the Greyhounds host the 2-3 Wauwatosa West Trojans. The game starts at 6:30 p.m. at Shorewood High School.
