Village Hit with Several Car Break-ins, Auto Theft

A car was stolen, and later recovered, and several car break-ins and thefts from autos were reported this week in Shorewood.

A car was stolen, and later recovered, and several car break-ins and thefts from autos were reported this week in Shorewood. A 1997 Toyota Avalon stolen from the driveway of a house in the 2000 block of East Jarvis Street overnight on Tuesday was recovered on Wednesday in the 4400 block of North Oakland Avenue. Police say there was no damage, but the car had been driven 104 miles. On Wednesday morning, a car parked in the 3500 block of North Oakland Avenue was illegally entered. A $150 pool cue, $380 in tattoo equipment, a pair of sunglasses were taken. Additionally, $50 in damage was reported to the interior of the car. Shorewood Coach Overwhelmed by Support; Still Waiting for Apology

Teacher receives more than 100 e-mails after being surrounded by armed cops in traffic stop in Whitefish Bay.

Dominic Newman says he has been overwhelmed with the amazing amount of support from the community after he was handcuffed at gunpoint for a mistaken case of auto theft, but he's still waiting on an apology from Shorewood police. "I've received like 100 e-mails and some messages on Facebook showing support," Newman said. A lot of the e-mails include stories of racial profiling by police in the North Shore, said Newman, who is the track coach at Shorewood High School and a teacher at Lake Bluff Elementary School.  The early Monday morning incident started with a 911 call from a Shorewood resident who heard a car alarm go off and thought a vehicle had been stolen. Yes, police brutality is an issue that needs to be addressed, but one cannot and should not attempt to address those problems by being overly critical and accusatory of these police officers. The officers involved in this stop were properly doing their job and properly following procedure.   more ›
