Shorewood's Welcome Neighbors Sets Attendance Record

Newcomers and Families Pack the Station at Saturday's Welcome New Neighbors Event on January 11, 2014! (And - keep reading - the next three dates and "hot" spots, revealed!)

The first-ever Saturday gathering for the Welcome New Neighbors Program drew over 100 attendees to the Police and Fire Departments in Shorewood on Saturday, January 11, 2014, from 10-11:30AM. This family-friendly event signaled a new level of collaboration of the Welcome Neighbor Program, the Police and Fire Departments, and the School District, as Rachel Vesco, School Communications Officer, helped the Program invite any new families (resident or non-resident) to the District in the 2013-2014 school year. The School promoted it in communications, and Superintendent Marty Lexmond was at the event to personally connect with the District parents and students.

The event was hosted by NSFD Battalion Chief John Maydak and Shorewood Police Chief David Banaszynski. Excited visitors gathered for coffee and cookies and an orientation by Welcome Neighbor Director, Jenny Heyden, and a short talk by the Police and Fire Departments. Groups were led by officers and firefighters through the buildings many intricate spaces, which encompasses the Police and Fire Departments. Visitors toured living quarters, the jail, the hallways and myriad nooks, and the fire pole. Many officers from both departments were on hand to expertly explain the squad bikes, cars, and engines, give out fire hats and information about the Village. Shorewood Trustee Ann McKaig was also in attendance.

Many good new resident questions came up such as proper operation of a wood-burning fireplace, and the police programs of citizen engagement and free home safety checks were appreciated by many. The program was news to longtime resident and Shorewood Historical Society Treasurer, Marilyn John, who said she learned new things at Saturday’s event (see her clever photobomb in banner picture).

Kerry Moore, new resident and Shorewood parent of daughter Calissa at SIS, asked for volunteer opportunities for herself and daughter. "I can't wait to get involved with my new community," she said.

A new Shorewood parent and resident, Debbie Timko, with son Warren, made a point to thank organizers for the event, and echoed sentiments of many parents. “This was a great experience for my son and me to share today.” She went on, “It just adds to a great year, and it was a great decision to move to Shorewood.”

About the artist: Slava Yanovsky, a Shorewood resident since 1980, created a large folk art piece for the Shorewood Public Library as a counter-point to the technology present in a modern library. Yanovsky was originally trained as a printmaker then began experimenting with cutting zinc and copper etching plates into weather vanes. Today, he approaches folk art in his own creative way with boldly-carved wood whirligigs and other whimsical objects.
