Cupcakes and Connections

It is Monday, June 10, and I can report that the welcoming of the first two participating families in the Welcome New Neighbors program went very well -- what a wonderful sharing of information in both directions.

The discussions began with the general identification of programs and services, along with customized bakery prepared to order (one child had a peanut allergy, for example, which was accommodated) by Ashley at Miss Cupcake, which I picked up fresh just before our meetings.

“Cupcakes?!," you’re saying? Heck, yeah. And that’s just the start. As more businesses find out about the program and give me valuable material to include, the bounty will grow and I will need a cart to meet with folks. If you are a business that would like to be represented to new neighbors, call me at 414-847-2721 or email welcome@villageofshorewood.org. Drop off brochures to Village Hall (do not drop off goats, or other live or perishable items, etc.).

Highlights from the weekend: The Erbas -- Dad moved here to offset a long commute home - daughter came to check out the high school, and in a nutshell, turned down a $20,000 college scholarship from her small high school up north in order to attend SHS. Cat Erba - congratulations on winning a peer award for Best Actress from SHS, and congratulations on your graduation Thursday in the class of 2013!

Another family has just moved here from Bayside because of the strength of the New Horizons (http://www.shorewood.k12.wi.us/page.cfm?p=2608) Program at Shorewood High School. "I would have moved anywhere in the world to find a good fit for my son," said Jill Compton, a mother and professional who sold her home in Bayside this year to move to Shorewood for the schools.

We met in succession at Alterra in Shorewood – which provided a warm welcome of its own on a busy Saturday morning, with neighbors and friends stopping by our table to say “Hello, and welcome.” We will continue to look for new neighbors for this program – please do not hesitate to email an address or name to me for inclusion, and I’ll follow up by leaving my card in the door, or an email or phone. Email welcome@villageofshorewood.org to let me know.

I want to make this as helpful as possible to all. Best, Jenny Steinman Heyden Welcome New Neighbors Program Village of Shorewood 3930 N Murray, Shorewood, WI 53211 414-847-2721 welcome@villageofshorewood.org
