Shorewood Wins WIAA Boys Track Championship

It was a great day for the 1,600-meter relay team, and the entire track team, which won the WIAA State Track and Field Division II title.

On a day when 18 state records were set, the Shorewood High School boys 1,600-meter relay team notched its own place in the history books Saturday in La Crosse.

The relay team of Alec Grimmer, Taylor Dennis, Jacob Goldberg, and Justin Rabon hydroplaned across the wet track inside Veterans Memorial Sports Complex during one of the final events of the championship weekend.

The boys won gold by running the 4x400 relay in 3:19.62, which was so fast even second place Mount Horeb broke the state record. The former record was set in 2006 by the relays team from Arcadia High School, which notched a time of 3:21.67. Grimmer, Dennis, and Rabon were part of the second-place 4x400 team that ran earlier on Saturday.

Here are the top three finishers from the 1,600-meter relay:
  1. Shorewood, 3:19.62 (state record)
