Greyhounds Easy Winner in WIAA Opener

Shorewood builds big lead in 67-25 triumph over young, shorthanded Milwaukee North

They say that experience will usually win out over youth.  That is especially true in sports, and even more so in high school sports.  Tuesday the veteran Shorewood Greyhounds took the young Milwaukee North Blue Devils to school by handily beating them 67-25 in a WIAA Division 2 girls basketball regional game.

Senior Mary Luba paced the balanced Greyhound attack with 17 points, all in the first half. Juniors Brianna McKinney and Bella Nassif each chipped in with 10 points.

Milwaukee North only had six players suited up for the game, and five were freshmen.

Shorewood coach Jeff Eimers was almost serene in his assessment of his team’s dominance.

“They start five freshmen, so they are a team that is young,” said Eimers.  “We have been playing well lately, but I think on this night we were just the superior team.”

Being the superior team was a bit of an understatement, as Shorewood jumped on North early and often.  After trading baskets in the opening minutes, the Greyhounds went on an 8-0 run to open up a gap.  Taking advantage of North’s turnovers and missed shots, Shorewood closed the opening quarter with a 17-9 advantage.

Perhaps it was the nerves of youth, or perhaps just the pressure of playoff basketball, but the second quarter saw North collapse under a myriad of turnovers and missed shots.

Led by Luba, Shorewood went on a 16-2 run to close out the half and blow the game open.  The eight-point advantage at the end of the first quarter had grown to 21as they took a 35-14 lead into the locker room.

Unfortunately for Milwaukee North, the third quarter turned out to be just as difficult, as Shorewood once again capitalized on numerous turnovers.  Shorewood outscored North 20-5 in the third quarter, and the rout was on. This was despite the fact that Coach Eimers pulled his starters and emptied the bench early on. The lead grew to 55-19 after three quarters.

“We actually didn’t play a great game,” said Coach Eimers. “We capitalized on their turnovers, we made enough of the easy shots.  They start five freshmen and it’s tough for them to compete just from a physical standpoint.”

Milwaukee North coach LaFreddie Hunt took some solace from the game, despite the score.

“I was hoping the game would have been closer than what it really was,” Hunt said.  “We just made some mistakes.  It’s a tough transition from eighth grade to high school. It’s real tough playing shorthanded.  The girls get tired, I can’t look to the bench to sub with nobody there.  But I can’t be too mad because when I first got them they couldn’t even dribble the ball at all.  Now if we can get the ball up the court, it’s a big plus.”

Shorewood moves on to play No. 2 seed Brown Deer on Friday night.
