Greyhound Update: Swimmers Edge Bay in Thrilling Finish

A recap of the week's sporting events at Shorewood High School.

Here is the week's recap of Shorewood High School sports, courtesy of Athletic Director Bill Haury:

Football – On Saturday, the varsity team traveled  to Horlick Field in Racine to play Saint Catherine’s.  A combination of Messwood mistakes, turnovers, and a very efficient passing attack by Saint Catherine’s resulted in a 35-0 loss for the Greyhounds.  Their record is now 1-2 in Midwest Classic Conference play.

Boys Soccer –  Monday night began Woodland Conference play for the Greyhounds as they traveled to South Milwaukee.  After a defensive first half, the Rockets scored at 60:00 to go up 1-0.  Shorewood answered 5 minutes later on a goal by Elliott Lane on an assist from Sam Tharpgeorge to tie the game at 1-all. Regulation time ended with the same score, and there were no goals scored in the two, 10-minute overtime periods, so the Greyhounds came away with a 1-1 tie.

Wednesday night, the Greyhounds hosted Greendale.  They totally dominated the game getting 13 shots on goals to the Panthers' three in a 2-0 win.  Sophomore Kieran Quinan scored both goals, one in the first half on an assist from Henry Cummings, and the second on an assist from Simon Miller.  Alex McMurtry made two saves to secure the shutout.  Shorewood is now 1-0-1 in Woodland Conference play and 3-3-1 overall.

Girls Swimming – The girls swam against neighboring rival Whitefish Bay on Wednesday in an extremely exciting meet.  It was close throughout the entire meet with the largest lead of either team being only four points early on, and the score went back and forth until the final event.  The team that won the 400 freestyle relay would win the meet and the relay team of Ellen Stello, Genevieve Hayes, Diana Yakshimamedova, and Kristin Malone did just that leading the entire race and winning by over .05 seconds ahead of the Blue Dukes relay team.  This led to a one-point, 85-84 victory to keep the girls undefeated in dual meets at 3-0.  The meet started off with the 200 medley relay team of Kristin Malone, Rachel Munson, Ellen Stello and Melissa Clausen taking first, followed by firsts in the 200 freestyle by Genevieve Hayes, in the 200 individual medley by Ellen Stello, and the 50 freestyle by Kristin Malone.  Diana Yakshimamedova then placed second in the 100 butterfly, followed by Stello’s first-place finish in the 100 freestyle.  The 200 freestyle relay team of Munson, Clausen, Yakshimamedova and Hayes won, followed by a first in the 100 backstroke by Malone, and a first in the 100 breastroke by Rachel Munson.  This all led to the dominating 400 freestyle performance and the one-point victory.

Cross Country – The teams traveled to Tendick Park in Saukville to compete in the Homestead Invitational against some of the stronger Division 1 teams in the area.  The boys took third, only eight points behind Wauwatosa East and five points behind Brookfield Central.  Peter Morris continued to lead the team finishing fourth overall, followed by Jacob Goldberg in 11th, Charlie Stahl in 12th, John Papke in 20th and Sam Kuhlman in 25th.  Other varsity runners were John Traudt in 28th, Michael Dellutri in 32nd, and Jack Mauer in 35th.  Dan Vrobel led the junior varsity team with his first-place finish in 18:26, which should earn him a spot on the varsity team for next week’s race.  Freshmen Mayan Essak, Johnnie Papineau, Max Geitzen and Sam Shields, along with Spencer Heywood and Jacob Schermer, were the scoring runners for the JV squad.

The girls also finished third, behind Wauwatosa East and Franklin, but ahead of Homestead by 6 points.  Haley Holan led the team with her third-place finish, while Abby Pech was sixth, Haley Florsheim was 12th, Lyndsey Lorris was 22nd, Laura Gould was 31st, Angie Sperry was 36th, and Haley Woyak was 39th.  Mimi Smith ran an incredible race, leading the JV team with her 11th-place finish.

Girls Tennis – The girls traveled to New Berlin West for their second Woodland Conference dual match.  They won the match 5-2.  Winners were Saabirah Abdullah at No. 1 singles, Victoria Nelsen at No. 2 singles, Elana Lambert at No. 3 singles, Kirstin Repins and Grace Hayes at No. 2 doubles, and Elleon Gough and Ari Schwartz at No. 3 doubles.  The team is now 2-0 in conference play.

Girls Volleyball – Tuesday the volleyball teams played their first dual match against Brookfield Academy.  The varsity girls won 3 out of 4 games, all of them close, with the fourth game finishing at 26-24 for the Shorewood victory.  Great passing kept the girls in the game with excellent defense coming from Zoe Deprez and Brittany Lee.

The girls on Thursday.  The only bright aspect of the match were the new lights that have been installed in the Arena, as Shorewood lost 11-25, 10-25, 13-25.  It may have been the extremely warm conditions in the arena that contributed to the girls' low energy, which is not characteristic of how the team has been playing thus far this season.

Saturday, the varsity team competed in the Milwaukee Riverside tournament, finishing the day with wins over Milwaukee Rufus King and Milwaukee Riverside, and three losses.  Two of the losses were in very close matches.  The girls played very well, improving consistently.  Paige Clingaman had an excellent day hitting, both from the front and back row.  Ashley Eimers had a good day both hitting and setting, Maja Ivanovic set the ball very well, Margaret O’Brien added lots of kills with her middle hitting, and Zoe Deprez stepped up playing libero for the whole day.
