Greyhound Update: Shorewood Track Sets New State Record in 4x400 Relay Win

Girls soccer team moves on to sectional round against Catholic Memorial in the WIAA tournament after dominating Milwaukee School of Languages and edging out Big Foot in regionals.

Here is this week's roundup of Shorewood High School sports, courtesy of Athletic Director Bill Haury:

Girl’s soccer — Thursday, the varsity girls hosted the Milwaukee School of Languages in a first round regional game. :27 into the first half, Joanna Baisch scored on a crossing pass from Ailsa Harju. Tricia Nelsen was the next to score on an assist from Theresa Le. Abby Pech scored an unassisted goal and a minute later Sunni Kessenich scored to give Shorewood a 4-0 halftime lead. Sunni led off the scoring in the second half with her second unassisted goal five minutes into the half.  Serah Washington then scored two goals, the first on an assist from Abby Pech, the second on an assist from Ailsa Harju. At this point, Coach Gentry began substituting and some of the JV players who had been brought up for the tournament got into the action. Grace Rybarik scored on an assist from Fionna Bucher, and then with one minute left in the game, Fionna scored on an assist from Tricia Nelsen to make the final score 9-0.

Shorewood moved on to the second round of regionals with a game against Big Foot. They controlled the opening 20 minutes of the game getting a goal from Sunni Kessenich on a nice pass from Theresa Le. Big Foot put a lot of defensive pressure on the Greyhounds but they were able to control play and take a 1-0 lead into halftime. In the second half, Big Foot put on their own offensive pressure, but led by Iris Moran and Ellen Gough, along with some very tough goal tending from Megan McMahon, Shorewood held on to win the game 1-0.

Boy’s track and field — The boys traveled to UW-La Crosse to compete in the WIAA State Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday. The athlete of the meet was junior Justin Rabon as he won the 200 meters in a time of 22.06 and the 400 meters in a time of 48.85. He also anchored the first place 4 x 400 relay team along with Alec Grimmer, Taylor Dennis, and Jacob Goldberg.  They set a new state record of 3:21.41 in the prelims on Friday. The 4 x 800 relay team of Peter Morris, Charles Stahl, Jack Mauer and Jacob Goldberg placed 11th. Charles also placed 10th in the 1600 meters with a time of 4:26, a :06 PR.

Girl’s track and field — The girls also competed in La Crosse on Friday and Saturday. Alexis Farrington placed seventh in the 200 meters in a time of 26.35 and placed third in the 400 meters in a time of 58.15. She also ran with the 4 x 400 relay team with Lily Blind, Brigitte Sellinger, and Syndney Cross that placed fourth. The 4 x 200 relay team of Sellinger, Cross, Blind and Chiara Sanders placed third in a time of 1:47. Haley Florsheim placed 15th in the 800 meters, and 12th in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:19, a PR by :11.

Baseball — The varsity opened their Woodland Conference schedule with a game at Thomas More. Cooper Lang pitched a complete game striking out 10 batters. Elliott Kucharczyk had one hit that scored Ian Roudebush, and scored himself on an RBI double by Andrew Mueller.

On Wednesday, the varsity boys bounced back to win a 12-10 game at Henry Aaron Field. Ian Roudebush pitched a complete game to get the victory. It took him a few innings to get settled down as the Cavaliers scored six runs in the first and two in the second to take an 8-6 lead after two innings. The Greyhounds scored two in the third to tie the game at 8-8. Thomas More scored one in each of the fourth and fifth innings to go back on top 10-8, but four runs in the bottom of the fifth for the Greyhounds gave them the lead 12-10. Ian pitched two shutout innings to seal the victory. Cooper Lang led the team with two singles and a double to drive in five runs. Elliott Kucharczyk hit two singles and got on base four times and scored four runs. Andrew Mueller and Karl Apfelbach each scored two runs, while Sam Dixon, Alec Nelsen, Oskar Bjornstad and Joey Palmisano each scored one run. Ben Steigman had two RBIs. The Greyhound defense was rusty in the beginning registering four errors for the game, but were solid the final two innings to get the victory.

Friday night, the varsity hosted Greenfield. They got off to a 5-3 lead after three innings with a combination of offense led by Cooper Lang and Andrew Mueller. Cooper had a two-run double and Andrew had a run-scoring single along with Karl Apfelbach. After that, the offense went silent, while Greenfield chipped away with three runs in the fourth inning and another in the seventh to take the win, 7-5. Oskar Bjornstad pitched a good game but four errors didn’t give him the support he needed. Cooper Lang was 2-for-3, while Andrew Mueller went 3-for-3, and Sam Dixon went 3-for-4.
