Greyhound Update: Football Team Just One of the Week's Winners

Swimmers, tennis players and the girls volleyball team all find success this week.

Here is the week's recap of Shorewood High School sports, courtesy of Athletic Director Bill Haury:

Football – Friday night, the varsity team .  For all intents and purposes, the game was over after the first quarter in which Messwood scored 41 points.  After that, Coach Drake Zortman and his staff did a great job of managing the game by playing backup players on their way to a 41-6 victory.  The offense was unstoppable, as quarterback Taylor Dennis threw for two touchdowns and the defense completely shut down The Hope School’s offense.  The team is now 2-2 in Midwest Classic Conference play.

Boys Soccer –  Wednesday night, the in a 5-0 victory.  Shorewood had 20 quality shots on goal to Whitnall’s five.  Seven minutes into the game Simon Miller scored on a nice assist from Henry Kruger.  Simon returned the favor, assisting on Henry’s goal at 16:38.  Bobby Kohl fed the ball to Elliott Kucharczyk twice for goals at 33:00 and 39:23.  Elliott then assisted on Elliott Lane’s goal at 39:40 to finish the first half and all the scoring the team needed.  They played ball control in the second half and only allowed one shot on goal for Whitnall in that half.  The team’s record is now 2-0-1 in conference and 4-3-1 overall.

Girl’s Swimming – On Wednesday, the girls traveled to Cudahy for their first Woodland Conference dual meet.  The girls continued their dual meet dominance, winning 126-44.  Multiple event winners were Chloe Borut in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breastroke, as well as a member of the 200 medley relay team; Rachel Munson in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke and as a member of the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay; Diana Yakshimamedova in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, and as a member of the 200 medley relay team; and Melissa Clausen in the 200 and 500 freestyle, and as a member of the 400 freestyle relay team.  They are now 1-0 in the Woodland Conference and 4-0 overall in dual competition.

On Saturday, they hosted the Shorewood Invitational, finishing fourth out eight strong schools.  Bay Port and Burlington tied for the team championship, something that rarely happens.  The meet began with a strong victory in the 200 medley relay by the team of Melissa Clausen, Rachel Munson, Ellen Stello and Kristin Malone. Ellen Stello took second in the 200 individual medley and Kristin Malone followed that with a victory in the 50 freestyle in a new pool record of 23.85.  Diana Yakshimamedova scored points for the team with a seventh-place finish in the 100 butterfly, as did Genevieve Hayes with a 10th in the 200 freestyle.

Kristin won the 100 freestyle in another pool record of 51.76.  Ellen Stello followed that with a third-place finish in the 500 freestyle.   Melissa Clausen took fifth in the 100 backstroke, followed by Rachel Munson’s victory in the 100 breastroke.  The 200 freestyle relay team of Munson, Hayes, Yakshimamedova and Lucy Petrick took third, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Stello, Clausen, Hayes and Malone also finished third.

Cross Country – The teams traveled to Hartland to compete in the Arrowhead Invitational which includes some of the strongest and largest teams in the area.  The girls recorded their highest finish ever at the meet with a sixth-place finish out of the field of 18 schools.  There were 17 season-best performances and 12 lifetime personal best times run at the meet by the members of the girls team.  Haley Holan led the team with her 17th-place finish, while close behind her were Abby Pech and Haley Florsheim in 20th and 23rd respectively.  All three girls ran under 15:40 which is tremendous.  Laura Gould was the fourth Shorewood varsity runner, finishing in 69th and Lindsey Morris was the final scoring runner in 77th. Grace Corry and Haley Woyak finished next to each other at 108th and 109th. Mimi Smith again led the JV team with her 33rd place in 18:01.  Claire Cohen was close behind in 48th.

The boys finished third out of 18 schools, three points ahead of Division 2 rival Monroe.  Peter Morris continues to lead the team and finished fifth overall.  He was followed by Jacob Goldberg in 20th, Charlie Stahl in 22nd, John Papke in 27th and Michael Dellutri in 42nd.  Sam Kuhlmann and Dan Vrobel were 50th and 70th respectively on the varsity team.

Girls Tennis – The girls won both matches this week to improve their Woodland Conference record to 4-0.

Tuesday, the girl’s beat Saint Francis 7-0.  Winners were Saabirah Abdullah at No. 1 singles, Victoria Nelsen at No. 2 singles, Elana Lambert at No. 3 singles, and Caroline Tweddell at No. 4 singles.  For doubles, Mary Matoba and Lizzy Tews won at No. 1, Kirstin Repins and Grace Hayes won at No. 2, and Ellen Gough and Ari Schwartz won at No. 3.

On Thursday, the team beat Cudahy 7-0.  The same girls won at the same positions except for Hannah Mentjes, who won at No. 4 singles.  Victoria Nelsen had a “golden set” in her match against Cudahy.  This means her opponent did not win a single point in the set.  This happens rarely in tennis and is a huge accomplishment for Victoria.

Girls Volleyball – Tuesday the teams played New Berlin West.  The varsity played a very good first game, staying close and battling tough before losing 17-25.  The next two games saw the Vikings put on a volleyball clinic winning the next two games and the match.

Thursday night, something occurred in the Arena that has not occurred for a long time, but is a sign of things to come for the girls volleyball program.  All three levels won their matches against Cudahy for a sweep of the Packers.  The varsity won in three straight games, 25-19, 25-18, 25-16.

Boys Volleyball – The team kicked off its season Saturday at the Racine Park Invite.  The Greyhounds won the Consolation bracket, placing 17th out of 32 teams.  They were third in their pool and then won four straight matches, beating Middleton in the Consolation final.
