Greyhound Swimmers Capture Sectional Crown

With all three relay teams through, goal is to improve on last year's fourth-place finish at state.

Shorewood swimming is headed for Madison.

The small squad made a big splash at the Division 2 sectional Saturday at Cudahy, winning the meet with 392 team points. The Greyhounds will send, at minimum, all three relays teams and senior Kasmir Bohannon, who won two events Saturday.

Winners from each of the six sectional sites, plus the next 12 fastest times in each event, qualify for the Division 2 state meet, which is Friday at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The Greyhounds “swam exceptionally well,” said coach Rob McCabe, winning all three of their relays and packing the podium with multiple swimmers in several events.

In the 200 IM, Shorewood finished third, fourth and fifth In the 100 butterfly, the team placed second, fourth and fifth.

Such performances truly showcased the talent and depth of Shorewood’s “small but talented” 16-man roster, said McCabe. The sectional championship is the school’s first during his decade-long tenure.

He credited seniors Bohannon and Andrew Eden for their leadership throughout the day and throughout the season.

Bohannon won the 50 freestyle in 22.14 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 47.99. Eder finished second in both the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Both swimmers were members of Shorewood’s victorious 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay teams.

Other top performers included Derek Lock, Henry Sanders, Kirill Korolev, Jay Tomasiewicz and Philip Clausen.

McCabe said the Greyhounds will rest up and head into the state meet with “confidence and courage.” Improving upon the team’s fourth-place state finish last year is the main goal, he said.

Shorewood’s closest competitors were Whitefish Bay and Elkhorn Area, who finished second and third, respectively.

Bay was boosted by the performances of sophomore Henry Smith, senior captain D.J. Friesch and senior Bobby Rinka. Smith won the 500 freestyle, Friesch claimed the 100 backstroke crown and Rinka turned in a first-place performance in the 1 meter dive.

Brookfield Academy finished eighth as a team, but its seniors Jack Donovan and Jonathan Marks were two of the meet’s top swimmers. Donovan won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, while Marks won the 200 IM and 100 backstroke.

The final team standings:

 Shorewood (392), Whitefish Bay (322.5), Elkhorn Area (312), Whitnall (217), Martin Luther (185), Delavin-Darien (168.5), Cudahy (162), Brookfield Academy (151), Pius XI (105), Whitewater (87) and St. Thomas More/St. Francis (73).
