Greyhound Roundup: Tennis Team Dominates in Week of Conference Play

Girls soccer team drops first Woodland Conference match.

Here is a roundup of Shorewood High School sports courtesy of Athletic Director Bill Haury.

Girl’s softball — The girls played six games in four days, with the game on Friday being rained out. The girls went 0-6, but played competitive throughout the week. Their best game was on Tuesday against Pewaukee where they kept the game close and mounted a rally in the final inning only to come up short in a 12-9 loss. Freshman Celeste Carroll continues to pitch well and the defense gives her strong support in the field, it’s just the team’s offense that has not gotten going yet this spring.

Golf — On Friday, the five varsity golfers worked through the rain and cold to take sixth place out of 14 teams in the Port Washington Invitational. Bobby Kohl was the top Shorewood golfer taking sixth place.

On Saturday, the conditions were much better for the New Holstein Invite.  Shorewood finished third out of 11 teams with Cameron Duncan shooting and 85 to finish ninth and Brian Morris one shot away at 86 to finish tenth. This earned second Team All-Tournament honors for both Cameron & Brian.

Boy’s tennis — It was a week of remaining undefeated in the Woodland Conference for the varsity team. Tim Perry went 4-0 for the week at No. 1 Singles without dropping a set. Perry has not lost a conference match this season. Sean Kelley also went 4-0 at No. 2 Singles with his biggest win against Greenfield where he dropped the first set but fought through the heat and wind to win the match. Alan Kang also went 4-0 at No. 3 Singles without losing a set and he has also yet to lose a match in conference play this season. Sasha Velikanov went 4-0 at No. 4 Singles and only losing four games in a span of four matches. Ethan Halloran and Grant Kleaveland-Kupczak went 2-1 at No. 1 doubles. They still have a match to complete against Brown Deer that was rained out on Thursday. Ben Kuhlmann and James Keane went 4-0 at No. 2 doubles winning all but four games in the four matches. They will likely earn a No. 1 seed at the conference tournament which is a testament to how well they are playing. Ben Wasserman and Seung-Hyun Jin went 3-0 at No. 3 doubles. They also have a match to finish against Brown Deer to see if they can stay undefeated in conference play.

Girl’s soccer – The teams played a rare Monday game that was a rescheduled game from the previous week at Wauwatosa West. West outshot the Greyhounds, 8-3, but Megan McMahon made all eight saves to shutout the Trojans. Sarah Waters scored 11 minutes into the first half and added another goal in the 73rd minute to give Shorewood a 2-0 conference win.

The next night, the girls traveled to Pewaukee and on a lousy field and very windy conditions, the Shorewood girls lost their first conference game, 1-0, on a shot that the wind floated over Meagan McMahon’s outstretched arms just before the end of the first half.

Thursday night, it was the weather that contributed to another conference loss. New Berlin West had taken a 2-0 first half lead when with under four minutes to go in the half, Annie Leo sent a shot in from the left side that got past the Viking’s goalie. The Greyhounds had the momentum going into the second half, but just over 10 minutes into the half, lightening and thunder caused the game to be suspended and them ended as a storm approached the field. The varsity team is now 3-2-1 in conference play, and 5-3-1 overall.
