Greyhound Roundup: Swim Team Off to Strong Start

A summary of the week's athletic results from Shorewood High School

Here's a roundup of the week in Shorewood High School sports, courtesy of Athletic Director Bill Haury. Find Shorewood High School athletic schedules on the Woodland Conference website:

Football – The team was on the road for the second week, traveling to Hartland to play Lake Country Lutheran.  After falling behind 13-0 in the first quarter, Xavier Johnson scored on a 20-yard run to cut the lead to 13-8.   The "Messwood" defense played tough in the second quarter, but long pass plays of 35 and 55 yards put Lake Country Lutheran up 27-8 at halftime.  Messwood came out in the second half and scored on a long, sustained drive that was capped by Alec Grimmer’s 1-yard run to bring the score to 27-14.  A successful onside kick gave the ball back to Messwood and good ball control and tough defense kept the LCL offense from scoring any second-half points.  In the fourth quarter, Messwood had another long drive that was kept alive with two nice passes from quarterback Taylor Dennis to Nate Wickstrom.  Taylor finished the drive with a 3-yard run to bring the score to 27-20, and that’s the way it ended. The team is now 1-1 in Midwest Classic conference play.

Boys Soccer – Thursday the varsity team played Brookfield Central, ranked fourth in the area.  The Lancers struck early with three goals in the first 30 minutes of the game.  Shorewood settled down after that and played the next 50 minutes very evenly, getting a few chances to score while giving up one second half goal in a 4-0 non-conference loss.

On Saturday, the team traveled to DePere for another non-conference match.  It was a spirited game with solid defense led by Kosta Ebben and Sam Tharpgeorge.  Goalkeeper Alex McMurtry made 5 tough saves, but one misplayed ball got past him which led to the 1-0 victory for DePere.  The Greyhounds are 2-3 heading into the first Woodland Conference game, today at South Milwaukee.

Girls Swimming – The girls opened their home season with a convincing victory over Grafton, 102-74.  It was an impressive start to the season with a large percentage of the times being personal best swims or faster than the starting point a year ago.  The highlight was sophomore Kristin Malone’s pool record, 24.20 in the 50 freestyle.   Malone also won the 100 backstroke and was on the winning 200 medley relay team with Rachel Munson, Ellen Stello and Melissa Clausen.  Freshman Rachel Munson won the 100 breastroke and 100 freestyle, and was on the winning 200 freestyle relay with Melissa Clausen, Diana Yakshimamedova and Genevieve Hayes.
