Greyhound Roundup: Girls Soccer Team Start Season 4-1

The boy's track and field team take first place team honors during the Brown Deer Invitational.

Here is a roundup of Shorewood High School sports courtesy of Athletic Director Bill Haury.

Golf — On Tuesday, the golf team tied Milwaukee Pius XI for second place in a Woodland East Division Mini Meet. The team was just six strokes behind first place South Milwaukee. The team was led by Bobby Kohl who shot 44, and James Wakley who shot 45. Brian Morris turned in a 47 in what could be called difficult ground conditions at best.

Boy’s tennis — The varsity team opened their conference schedule with a 4-3 win against Whitnall on Tuesday. Five of the seven matches went to three sets with Tim Perry winning at No. 1 singles and Ethan Halloran & Sean Kelly winning at No. 1 doubles. On Friday and Saturday, the varsity team participated in the Brookfield Academy Quad.  They played Brookfield Academy on Friday and played well, but lost 3-4. On Saturday, they began the day by dominating New Berlin Eisenhower 7-0. They faced D2 powerhouse Madison Edgewood in the afternoon and played them tough coming up just short 3-4. Tim Perry is undefeated at No. 1 singles and had a huge win against Brookfield Academy’s No. 1 player. Ben Kuhlmann and James Keane are 3-1 with their only loss coming in a shortened match that had it been played with the standard scoring format they would likely have had a winning result. Tommy Chambelain had two wins at No. 4 singles and won a tough three-set match against the Madison Edgewood No. 4.

Thursday, the teams traveled to Whitnall on a cold and rainy evening. The weather didn’t dampen the varsity girls as they scored 6 goals in the first half on their way to an 8-0 conference victory. Sara Waters got the Greyhounds on the scoreboard with a goal in the third minute of the game. Serah Washington scored the second goal on a nice pass from Sunni Kessenich. Freshman Marlee Lane scored to make the score 3-0 in the 17th minute. Sara Waters scored the next three goals to extend the Shorewood lead to 6-0 at halftime. Serah Washington scored her second goal eight minutes into the second half and a goal two minutes later gave Shorewood an 8-0 lead and left them 2-0 in conference play.

Friday night, Shorewood hosted the fifth Annual Eastside Cup. The varsity girls played Dominican in the first round game. Defensively, the Greyhounds didn’t allow one shot and offensively put 11 shots on goal.  Sara Waters scored the first goal at 13:49 and followed that up six minutes later with her second goal on a nice pass from Eva Miller, to give Shorewood a 2-0 halftime lead. Five minutes into the second half, Marlee Lane scored to make it 3-0 and a little over a minute later, Sara Waters scored her third goal to give the Greyhounds a 4-0 victory.

Saturday morning, the teams arrived at the field to find it covered in snow.  Fortunately, the sun was warm and melted the snow by the second half.  By that time, Sunni Kessenich had scored two goals, one in each half to give the Greyhounds a 2-0 victory and a spot in the championship game against Nicolet. The Nicolet game was close and hard fought, each team only getting four shots on goal.  Unfortunately, Nicolet scored early in the second half to take the championship, 1-0. It was a good weekend for the girls as they showed that they are a determined team having played 5 games in one week and earning a 4-1 record.
