Greyhound Roundup: Girls Soccer Team Rolls over Greenfield

Girls softball team earns two wins in five games last week.

Here is a roundup of Shorewood High School sports courtesy of Athletic Director Bill Haury.

Girl’s softball — In their second week of five or more games, the varsity girls earned two wins against three losses. They lost to Whitnall, 11-0 with the Falcomns scoring seven of their runs in the third and fouth innings. They split a double header with Brown Deer, winning 5-4 in the first game and losing the second game, 4-6. In the second inning, Brittany Lee hit a 2-out, 2-run single that gave Shorewood the lead that they never relinquished on their way to the 5-4 victory. Brittany also made a diving catch in center field to save what would have been a three run homer. Aisling Moloney and Ashley Eimers each had two hits and Aisling stole home in the first inning. In the second game, the Greyhounds got behind early but clawed their way back into the game on 2 hits from Ashley Eimers and a double by Aisling Moloney.  Ellie Larkey pitched very well in relief, shutting down the Brown Deer offense and giving the Greyhounds a good chance to come back and win the game. In their second win of the week, the varsity girls beat Milwaukee Hamilton 11-1.  Freshman Celeste Carroll threw a no-hitter and was backed up with strong defense. Meredith Behm, Brittney Lee, and Aisling Moloney all had two hits. In the final game of the week, against Greendale, the Panthers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings. Cindy Schuelke turned a double play to stop the Greendale offense and turn the momentum in Shorewood’s favor. Ashley Eimers, Cindy Schuelke, and Aisling Moloney each collected two hits to pull the Greyhounds close in the latter innings of the game.  Greendale scored some late inning runs to win the game 10-5.

Boy’s tennis — On Saturday, the varsity team competed at the Racine Prairie Quad. Against Prairie, the Greyhounds lost a close one 2-5. First and third doubles both had close, three-set matches. At No. 1 singles, Tim Perry was up against last year’s D2 state champion, Zane Navratil. Tim played some really good points and learned a lot from the match before bowing out against Navratil. Ben Kuhlmann and James Keane continued their winning ways at No. 2 doubles with a straight set victory. Against Big Foot, Shorewood won handily, 6-1. At No. 1 doubles, Ethan Halloran and Ben Wasserman earned their first victory of the season in straight sets. The final team match was against University School and was the same 0-7 result form last year, yet Tim Perry played much better against Michael Lukas at No. 1 singles. The last time they met, Tim lost 0-6, 0-6. This time, Tim won the first set and had the momentum in the second set until he slightly pulled his right hamstring. Tim fought hard, but lost in the third set super tie breaker. Sasha Velikanov went 2-1 for the day with his only defeat against USM at No. 4 Singles. It was also the only loss of the day for Ben Kuhlmann & James Keane at No. 2 doubles.

Girl’s soccer — The varsity girls got a solid win on Tuesday night as they hosted the Hustlin’ Hawks from Greenfield. They outshot Greenfield 13-5 and controlled the game from start to finish. Eleven minutes into the first half, goalkeeper Megan McMahon fielded the ball and punted it out to midfield where Sara Waters gathered it in, split two defenders, headed toward the goal and sent the ball past the Greenfield goalkeeper to put Shorewood ahead 1-0 and give Megan McMahon an rare assist from her goalkeeper position. At the 23:00 mark Sunni Kessenich took a nice pass from Waters and put the ball in the goal to extend the lead to 2-0. Seven minutes later, Kessenich got control of a loose ball in front of the goal and blasted it in for her second goal and a 3-0 Shorewood lead. Sara Waters scored her second goal of the game with under six minutes left in the game on an assist from Kessenich to make the final score 4-0.
