Girls Tennis Defeats Greenfield, Cudahy

A recap of the latest sports news from Shorewood High School.

Football: The Messmer/Shorewood JV team traveled to St. John’s and earned their second win of the season. With the score tied 14-14 going into half and again tied 22-22 at the end of regulation, Messmer/Shorewood started on offense for the first possession of the overtime.  Starting at the 25-yard line, the offense pounded the ball into the end zone and converted the two point conversion, giving Messmer/Shorewood an 8 point lead.  St. John's offense was able to score on their first possession of the overtime as well.  However the Messmer/Shorewood defense held strong and stopped St. John's two-point attempt, putting the final score at 30-28.  The JV squad improves their record to 2-2 for the season. 

On Friday, September 20th, the Messmer/Shorewood Varsity football team controlled the Hope School in a 48-12 romp. DeAngelo Stewart (3), Louis Williams (1), Jekim Jones (1), and Riley Sellinger (1) all scored touchdowns.

Boys Volleyball: The boys volleyball team played Wauwatosa West on Monday, September 16th, and lost in a heartbreaker in 5 sets. On Wednesday, September 18th, the team lost another close match in five sets to Greenfield.

On Saturday, the 21st, the team participated in the Wauwatosa East Invitational.

Boys Soccer: The boys soccer team beat South Milwaukee on Monday, September 16th, 4-0. Owen Moran, Elliot Lane, Chris Zak, and Kieren Quinan all scored goals for Shorewood.

On Wednesday, September 18th, the team lost to Wauwatosa West 2-0.

Girls Tennis: The girls tennis team defeated Greenfield on Tuesday, September 17th, to remain undefeated in conference play. On Thursday, the 19th, the team celebrated another win with a 7-0 victory over Cudahy, making the team undefeated for their half of the conference. Individual results are below:

  • 1 Singles: Elizabeth Kruch won 6-0, 6-0
  • 2 Singles: Jenna Vuorinen won 6-0, 6-0
  • 3 Singles: Bryn Urban won 6-0, 6-0
  • 4 Singles: Grace Reckmeyer won 6-2, 6-0
  • 1 Doubles: Tricia Nelsen and Grace Rybarik won 2-6, 6-1, 6-3
  • 2 Doubles: Ellie Schmitt and Hayley Ostrowski won 6-2, 6-1
  • 3 Doubles: Claire Howland and Grace Kleaveland-Kupczak won 6-0, 6-1 

On Saturday, September 21st, the team participated in the Roncalli Quad. Unfortunately, Shorewood lost all three match-ups 1-6 with wins by the following:

  • 1 Doubles Tricia Nelsen and Grace Rybarik defeated Roncalli 7-6 (8-6), 1-6, (12-10)
  • 3 Singles Bryn Urban defeated St. Catherine's 6-3, 6-2
  • 4 Singles Grace Reckmeyer defeated Newman Catholic 4-6, 6-4, 10-8   

Girls Volleyball: The team dominated St. Francis in three games on Tuesday, September 17, to win their match in three games. Two days later, on the 19th,  the team beat Brown Deer in an exciting five-set match.

On Saturday, team participated in the New Berlin Invitational.

Girls Swimming: Both the JV and Varsity teams won in a dual against South Milwaukee on September 18th. The varsity team finished 121-59, while JV took home the victory with a final score of 73-71. Kristin Malone, 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly, and Rachel Munson, 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, and Leah Jorn, 50 and 100 freestyle, were all double event winners. Chloe Borut (200 IM) and Eva Jorn (500 Freestyle) were also individual event winners.

On Saturday, September 21st, the team participated in the Nicolet Sprint Invite.  The Greyhounds finished 6th overall.  Rachel Munson paced the team by winning the 100 IM and taking the silver in the 50 Breaststroke.  Leah Jorn reached the podium in 200 Freestyle and 200 IM.  Eva Jorn finished 8th in the 50 Butterfly and 10th in the 50 Freestyle.  Monica Dix had a pair of 10 place finishes in the 100 IM and 50 Breaststroke.  Elena Cruz added points in the 200 and 100 Freestyles. Grace Anderson and Shelby Hammond also contributed to the team’s success.

Boys Cross Country: The Greyhounds traveled to Wausau, WI. to compete in the 57th annual Smiley Invite to see different competition. At the meet, the junior varsity runners had a perfect day. (A perfect score in cross-country is having your top 5 runners finish 1-2-3-4-5.) Below are the top finishers for the JV team:

  1. 1.     Max Gietzen JR Shorewood
  2. 2.     Dylan Larson-Harsc JR Shorewood
  3. 3.     Alex Luger SO Shorewood
  4. 4.     Mario Fregoso SO Shorewood

The Varsity team also finished first at the meet. The following runners earned top finishes at the meet:
