Changes to How You E-Read

If you are a user of the library's e-books, you may have recently noticed a series of updates to the experience.

OverDrive Media Console update

OverDrive Media Console, the app that readers use on iOS devices like iPhones and iPads, Android smartphones and tablets, and Kindle Fires, underwent a total redesign and relaunch for the latest update in late August. If you have not yet explored it - or if you are not yet an e-book user at all - we think you will like the more intuitive way it works. OverDrive, the makers of the app, simplified and relocated the menu to make it easier to use. One great new feature for iOS users is variable-speed playback on audiobooks so you can listen to things more quickly or slow them down for greater comprehension.

One drawback to the new app is that those of you who have an older iOS device still using earlier versions of the Apple operating system, may not be able to use the app at all. This is unfortunate, as we want everyone to have access to e-books. We are happy to help you figure out if your iPad or iPhone is compatible with the newly upgraded app if you bring your device to the library. Depending on the age of your device, you may be able to perform a simple upgrade to the latest iOS in order to get the OverDrive app and read library e-books.

Apple Operating System update

In addition to these changes, the recent Apple operating system update, called iOS 7, is causing issues for some e-book readers.

If you were just using OverDrive Media Console without a problem, and then found it locked you out after performing the latest update on your iPad, you may simply need to re-authorize it. This might be the tricky part: remember that Adobe ID you used to set up the app initially? You need to know that to re-authorize the app now that you have upgraded your operating system. If you can't recall it, you may create a new one but you will lose any e-books you currently have checked out. Already tried to re-authorize and still unable to get to your books? Uninstall and re-install the app, authorize once more, and re-download your e-books. If you can't remember how, come pick up instructions, and maybe a quick lesson, at the library.

As always, any assistance you need to access library materials of any kind - including digital books and audiobooks - is available at the library every day that we are open. Just stop by one of the information desks with your device and we will work through the problem with you!
