What's Up This Week in Shorewood? Band-O-Rama; Preps Sports

A look ahead at the week's local events and news.

Here's a look at what's coming up this week in Shorewood. If we're missing something, you can add it to the calendar.

Shorewood goes Band-O-Rama — 's 2nd annual Band-O-Rama concert is slated for 7 p.m. Thursday in the arena.

The concert showcases the district’s entire band program, including the combined and fifth and sixth grade bands, the seventh grade concert band and eighth grade symphonic band. Additionally, the Shorewood High School concert band and wind ensemble will perform.

The high school arena is located at 1701 E. Capitol Dr.

Preps sports — After picking up a big win over Cudahy last week, the Shorewood boys basketball team will travel to Brown Deer for a Woodland Conference match Tuesday night. Then on Friday, the boys will then host the Milwaukee School of Languages. The boys are 8-7 (5-7) this season.

The girls basketball team will host their lone match of the week on Tuesday, against Brown Deer. The girls are 4-11 (3-9) on the season.

Shorewood boy’s swimmers compete in a conference meet on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Greenfield High School, 4800 S. 60th St.

The Whitefish Bay-Shorewood-Nicolet combined hockey team will battle Waukesha on Wednesday, then play Grafton on Friday. The Storm are 9-9-1 (3-3-0) this season. The Storm plays at the Kern Center in downtown Milwaukee, 1245 N. Broadway St.

Children in the digital age — Do you feel outpaced by your technologically-savvy kids? Social networking sites have morphed into a regular medium for teens and adults to exchange information about themselves, share pictures and videos, and use blogs and private messaging to communicate with friends, and sometimes even the world-at-large. 

Are these tools hindering the development of relationship skills for teens? Perhaps not.

But, with issues of online bullying and rumor spreading, identity theft, blogging and the real threat of sexual predators, it is important to be aware of the possible pitfalls that come with networking online.

Guest speaker Jacques du Plessis, of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s School of Information Studies, will be at , 4048 N. Bartlett Ave., at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday to give a lecture on the issue.
