SHS Students Seeking Community's Help in Buzz Cuts for Cancer Event

Shorewood High School Principal Matt Joynt told students he'd get a buzz cut if they raise $2,500 in donations in his name.

Haircuts will come in one style on May 23 at — short.

Students are ramping up for their eighth year of Buzz Cuts for Cancer, an event where students, teachers and members of the community exchange money and pledges for a very short haircut with the proceeds going to the MACC Fund, a national organization supporting research into the effective treatment and cure of childhood cancer and blood disorders.

But, there’s a little twist on the event this year; students have asked high school Principal Matt Joynt to participate.

Avery Anapol, a junior at Shorewood and the student organizing the event, along with junior Lily Blind, said Joynt is very attached to his hair and will only participate if organizers can raise $2,500 in his name.

“We need a lot of help from the community from people who would like to see him shave his head,” Anapol said. “He doesn’t have a lot hair, but he is attached to it; he’s a pretty boy.”

Anapol added for those who are shy about losing their locks, they can pledge donations in their friend's name.

Additionally, some students with longer hair will have their hair trimmed and donate their locks to Pantene Beautiful Lengths and the Pink Heart Fund, organizations that collect the hair and provide hairpieces to those affected by cancer.

Local stylists and parent volunteers will donate their time to provide the buzz cuts.

The event starts at 2:30 p.m. in the Shorewood High School Arena and is open to the public. Residents can come and watch students get their buzz cuts or donate in a student's name, Anapol said.
