Shorewood Snapshot: Recall Primary Tuesday; Officials Talk Atwater Playground Upgrades

A look at this week's local events and news.

Here's a look at what's coming up this week in Shorewood. If we're missing something, please add it to the calendar.

— Tuesday is, of course, recall primary day. Voters will cast ballots in Republican and Democratic recall primaries in preparation for a gubernatorial general recall election June 5.

Voters will also choose a Democratic candidate to run against Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, who is not opposed in the primary, in a recall election on June 5.

Officials discuss Atwater Park slide, playground equipment — A 25-feet slide down the bluff and three pieces of playground equipment have some village trustees uneasy but they have agreed to .

Officials are scheduled to discuss and possibly consider approval of the equipment at a regular Village Board meeting Monday night at 7:30 at , 3930 N. Murray Ave.

Trustees are also slated to consider a contract for treatment to control the Emerald Ash Borer beetle, and discuss a proposed gate at Atwater Park to deter trespassers onto Atwater Beach afterhours and onto private beaches.

— Join Shorewood High School drama students for this collaboration of Elton John and Time Rice. A contemporary, musical take on the grand classic tale of the timeless love — here between an enslaved Nubian princess and an Egyptian soldier. As their forbidden love blossoms, the young couple is forced to face death or part ways forever.

The show opens Friday and runs through May 19. All shows start at 7:30 p.m. except for the Sunday matinee which starts at 2 p.m. in the Shorewood High School arena, 1701 E. Capitol Dr. Saturday is SHS Alumni Night. Join Alumni from near and far to pay tribute to the show and long-time theater director Barb Gensler's legacy. The performance on May 17 will recognize all Shorewood district volunteers.

— The Atwater Rummage Sale is set for Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at , 2100 E. Capitol Dr. If you are interested in helping or have any questions, please contact Christin Wille at christinwille@gmail.com.

Preps sports — The Shorewood High School softball team has a busy week with an away games on Monday through Thursday against Wauwatosa West, New Berlin West, Cudahy and Greendale respectively. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday's games start at 4:15 p.m. and Tuesday's game starts at 3:45 p.m. Shorewood is 2-9 (2-5) this season.

Shorewood's girls soccer team will travel to New Berlin Eisenhower for a 4:30 p.m. match on Tuesday and play a home game against South Milwaukee at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The team is 6-2-1 (5-1-1) on the season.

The high school boys tennis team has two meets and matches this week including matches on Tuesday at New Berlin West and at Brown Deer on Wednesday. Both games starts at 4 p.m. A junior varsity conference tournament is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday at Greendale/Greenfield High Schools.

The Shorewood golf team will participate in two meets this week including a 2:30 p.m. mini-meet at Grant Park Golf Course on Tuesday and a mega-meet at Broadlands Golf Club Thursday afternoon at 12:30.

All home games are played at , 1701 E. Capitol Dr.

School Board meets Tuesday — Officials will update and consider approving several district policy and guidelines, among other things, at a regular meeting starting at 7 p.m.

— Tips, tricks and step-by-step how-tos to make the most of annual flowering plants in your garden. The workshop starts at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at 2107 E. Capitol Dr.

Other village meetings — The Shorewood Foundation and village's Parks Commission and Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Committee meet on Tuesday 4:30, 5:30 and 7 p.m. respectively. Then, the Library Board and Board of Appeals meets 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. respectively. The Design Review Board will convene on Thursday at 5 p.m.

All of the meetings take place at Village Hall, 3930 N. Murray Ave.
