'Shorewood Fowl 5000' 5K Fun Run Slated for Nov. 10

Registration is underway for the annual 5k race, which serves as a fundraiser for Shorewood High School's boys and girls cross country teams.

Runners will line up at the starting line at 10 a.m. on Nov. 10, as the Fowl 5000 5k fun run and walk, formerly known as the , gets under way for the 18th time.

“The main reason for the change is to make it unique and to highlight the 'fowl' awards that the runners can win”, Shorewood School District Athletic Director Bill Haury said.

Haury added he wanted to get away from the generic naming of “Turkey Trot," which many fun runs around the state are coined.

Additionally, organizers have altered the race's route this year, with the start and finish line on the track, instead of at in years past.

In an effort to make race-day more efficient, Haury said, “people will be closer to the school, it will be easier for spectators to watch, and make warm-up and cool down more convenient.”

For a number of years the top three finishers in each age group (women, men, boys and girls) have been awarded poultry prizes such as turkeys, ducks and Cornish hens for their efforts. The race is typically held before Thanksgiving.

The event, which supports the Shorewood High School Cross Country teams, drew a record crowd of more than 300 participants and spectators last year.

“Moving forward, (we’re looking for) more participants, more exposure for Shorewood cross country programs and running in general in the Shorewood community,” Haury continued.

The Shorewood Fowl 5000 has been a crucial part of the operation and success of the Shorewood Cross Country programs, helping with travel and allowing the team to attend highly competitive meets.  Last year the success followed the boys and girls teams all the way to WIAA State Cross Country Meet as they finished third and sixth place overall.

Interested runners can register online at ShorewoodRecreation.org (Course #1970.1), by returning a registration form from the Fall 2012 Recreation Guide (pg.33), or by calling the Shorewood Community Fitness Center at 414-961-3100.

Pre-race registration is $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under.  Race-day registration and check-in takes place at the commons, 3830 N. Morris Blvd., and is $20 for everyone who registers day-of. This year, Shorewood Fowl 5k knit hats will be distributed to all registered participants. Post-race activities include a raffle and presentation of the poultry awards, donated by Haury.
