Shorewood Resident Enrollment Creeps Upward for 2nd Straight Year

The district gained 11 students overall, resulting in an estimated $18,000 increase in the district's revenue limit.

For the second year in a row, the Shorewood School District saw an increase in resident student enrollment following a decade of fairly rapid decline.

Shorewood's resident enrollment grew by 20 and total enrollment β€” factoring in a loss of nine open enrollment students β€” increased by 11 from last year's count. The growth, which was more than district officials anticipated, allows Shorewood to increase its revenue limit by $18,000.

"The reason we lost some open enrollment students was because they moved into the district ... four or five actually moved in," Superintendent Blane McCann said.

State aid to schools is largely determined by the number of resident students in the district. Shorewood won’t immediately see the benefits of an increase this year however, as state aid is set from a three-year average.

The increase in students has created some staffing issues, in particular at Atwater Elementary, McCann said.

Officials have said increasing resident enrollment and establishing an endowment are keys to becoming financially stable. After a decade in which the district's enrollment waned, .

Business Manager Mark Boehlke expects another jump in student enrollment next year, but projections suggest it could then fall off again.
