Shorewood Patch Week in Review

In case you missed it, here are some of the stories from last week, you need to know about.

The news week was one dominated by protests and rallies against Gov. Scott Walker's controversial budget repair bill.

"The effects as we know it would be devastating," Sachin Pandya, a Lake Bluff Elementary School teacher, said as he led a teachers rally Monday against Gov. Scott Walker's budget repair bill. Pandya handed out buttons reading "Love your teachers? Support their union!" and quietly protested with around 30 Shorewood teachers against a bill to be voted on Thursday which would eliminate many collective bargaining rights of public union workers, including teachers.

A morning text message exchange between high school students spurred a spontaneous student-led protest against the governor's budget repair bill at Tuesday. The peaceful protest lasted only 15 minutes, but hundreds of students walked out of classrooms to march around Shorewood High School about 9:15 a.m.

There may be some changes coming to your local . With Roundy's looking to possibly expand the grocery story at 4145 N. Oakland Ave., the company has purchased the rights to Shorewood’s sole , 4081 N. Oakland Ave., and the property at 4093 N. Oakland Ave., which use to house the Open Book bookstore. “Roundy’s controls all of that… before they used to lease it, but now they own all of the rights to that dirt,” Community Development Authority Chairman Pete Petrie said.

Due to needed sewer repairs in Shorewood, the village says it has to cut back on road and alley reconstruction and the amount it plans to pay on a new police facility in its long-range plans. In all, it will cut $7.6 million in general capital projects it funds through the tax property tax levy because of the needed .

The School Board voted unanimously Wednesday to send a letter to two key lawmakers, opposing Gov. Scott Walker's budget repair bill, but not before some serious discussion among members. The letter will make its way to state Sen. Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) and Rep. Robin Vos (R-Burlington), the co-chairmen on the Legislature's Joint Finance Committee, which is reviewing the bill.

Wielding signs and receiving approval via car horns, a group of protesters including local teachers, students and residents rallied for the fourth day in a row, along North Oakland Avenue and East Capitol Drive, Thursday.
