Shorewood High School May Go a Year Without Principal

It's back to the drawing board for the search for a new principal at SHS as district decides not to hire Brookfield assistant principal at this time.

Shorewood High School will start the school year with an interim principal and it's possible the school won't have a permanent one until 2014, the district said Friday.

When the week started, Natalie Collins, the associate principal at Brookfield Central High School, appeared to be the front-runner for the job. After a second top candidate withdrew from consideration, Collins was the lone finalist for the post and met with community members at an informal question-and-answer session on Monday.

But after two hours of discussion, the district committee charged with interviewing and recommending principal candidates decided to reopen the principal search rather than recommend Collins for the position.

Since the school year begins in about a month, the district plans to hire an retired administrator as interim principal as it continues to look for a permanent replacement, officials said Friday.

"The panel felt that this was a good direction because the commitment was made to present more than one finalist to the community and because parent survey results showed support to take the time necessary to identify great candidates for the principal position, rather than simply rushing to have a principal in place for the start of the school year," the district said in a statement. "The panel agreed that additional candidates should be vetted and interviewed with Ms. Collins remaining in consideration throughout this process."

The district will continue to search for a few more weeks for another finalist for the post, but if a strong candidate does not emerge, the hiring decision will be put off until next spring. Since it's so close to the start of the school year, most viable candidates already have jobs lined up for this fall.

Collins has been at Brookfield Central since 2005. Before that, she was an English teacher at Custer High School in Milwaukee.

She is a 1999 graduate of Marquette University, has a master's degree from Marian University and a doctorate from Cardinal Stritch University.

Collins is vying to replace Matt Joynt, who resigned this month to take an assistant superintendent position in the Mequon-Theinsville School District.
