Shorewood High School Graduation Rate Remains Solid

While the statewide graduation rate was steady at 89.9 percent, Shorewood's increased to 97.5 percent.

Shorewood High School's graduation rate remains well above Wisconsin's average, according to data released by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Access full reports here.

With the state graduation average at nearly 90 percent, Shorewood High School saw 97.5 percent of its students graduate in 2009-10, using a traditional legacy rate formula, which measures all who graduated in a given year. This year, Wisconsin DPI used a four-year adjusted cohort formula which calculates how many graduate within four years. Using this rate, 96.3 percent of Shorewood students graduated.

Shorewood saw a slight improvement from last year's rate, which was 97 percent using the legacy rate formula.

"We have traditionally been very high for graduation rates," Supt. Blane McCann said. "We are very proud of our graduation rate. A lot of the credit goes to our counselors,  administrators and teachers for the great work they do."

While the state's average was 89.9 percent in the 2009-10 school year, which is up from 89.4 percent in the 2008-09 school year, using the four-year adjusted cohort formula, the state’s rate is at 85.7 percent.

“Wisconsin has traditionally had one of the highest, if not the highest, graduation rates in the nation,” State Superintendent Tony Evers said in a press release. “We should be proud of this accomplishment as we work to ensure every child is a graduate. But, we all know that even one dropout is too many.”

According to Wisconsin DPI, 413 of the state’s 584 public and charter high schools had a graduation rate above the state average and 75 high schools had a 100 percent legacy graduation rate.

The legacy rate had been used in Wisconsin since the 2003-04 school year. DPI said by the 2012-13 school year, it will report both four-year and six-year adjusted cohort graduation rates.

Evers said reporting two graduation rates gives a more comprehensive picture of student's transition from high school in Wisconsin.

The state saw 64,687 public school students graduate in the 2009-10 school year.
